Unrest in Hong Kong

All quiet on the island today. Have been here three times since the protests started and haven't once had plans seriously interrupted.

The media will always show images of the worst area at the worst time of day, which may only be for a very short period. Certainly can't be extrapolated to the whole city.

Looks like things have flared up again this morning with Police going in pretty hard to clear the streets. Not as violent as their first attempt but certainly doesn't look good on TV right now.

I have been in Hong Kong for the past six days, got back home this morning. There is no protests at Mong Kok, it (Nathan Road) has been cleared however a very large police presence in the area. The major protest site at Admiralty appears to be where the action is, and although I am quite sympathetic to the protests, I have seen enough news in the last few days to change my view that the protesters are now contributing to the problem. Most of the news I have seen, seems to suggest that the protesters are being quite aggressive and using a legal 'loophole' that they do not need to obey police instructions especially with respect to demonstration. The police have made it clear that the protesters not breach or advance past defined boundaries, yet there is clear video evidence that the protesters have been using 'mob/gang' mentality to attack and advance when clearly instructed not to.

A report received this morning from a young friend, who has been in Hong Kong this past week or so:

<Indeed, the protests and police involvement are intense here at the moment. The situation declined considerably in the last couple of days - but then again the protest has been going on for about two months now.

I have seen quite a few protest camps of the Occupy Movement, marked by their umbrellas and tents. They have blocked major through streets and crossings. Therefore, you never know which area will be affected first and this affects public transport also.

On Sunday night I strolled through a very large protest camp in the Wan Chai area. The highway had literally turned into a little village, complete with flower garden and all. This camp was brutally taken apart early yesterday morning.>

I'm a little late with my contribution, but I was staying at Langham Place in Mong Kok from 7th to 12th November and it was fine. Nathan Road was still closed and apart from all the police and press around, nothing much was happening. I did subsequently hear that the MK camp had been dismantled and Nathan Road reopened.

Just thinking back to our trip between 07 November and 10 November we didn't really notice anything regarding the protests other than mention in the news.

Where about on Nathan Road are the protestors (just keeping in mind Nathan road ain't exactly short). eg Suburbs / cross roads?
Whilst still a couple of months off, I'm looking at heading to HKG at the end of January, and I was planning on staying around Nathan Road (since that's where I typically gravitate towards when I'm over there).

It was closed just south of the Argyle Street/Nathan Road junction, just near the Langham Place complex. I believe it's all gone from there now though.

Yeah I tend to hang around between Salisbury Rd (well actually the waterfront if you want to be technical) up to Jordan Rd. I've never had a need to go as far as Argyle st, but good to know.
