Unlimited Transfers- What Does this Mean?

I was looking on ITA at the fare rules for some whY QF flights to TSV and I noted the following.

Stopovers: NO STOPOVERS PERMITTED. NO STOPOVER OCCURS IF PASSENGER TAKES NEXT AVAILABLE FLIGHT WITHIN SAME DAY. NOTE - TRAVEL MUST BE WITHIN THE SAME CALENDAR DAY

Transfers: UNLIMITED TRANSFERS PERMITTED. NOTE - TRANSFERS PERMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ROUTE MAPS.

Does the unlimited transfers mean I could travel BNE-TSV via ASP and CNS for the base BNE-TSV fare plus the applicable taxes and fuel fines assuming I take the next available flight.

Reason I ask is that a certain website gave me a BNE-TSV routing of BNE-ASP-CNS-TSV and then TSV-CNS-MEL-BNE for $420 return but when I went to price it officially, the price had changed to $1200?

The core issue with this is the "in accordance with the route map"

You need to look at the route map to see what is permitted since many routes are "direct or non-stop only" so you can have unlimited stopovers at any of the zero airports you can transit through

There is generally a MPM (Maximum Permitted Mileage) associate with the fare, so you must also remain within that limit. I would expect the routing via ASP and CNS to exceed the MPM allowance.

And note that you will pay a fuel fine for each sector.

Thanks Dave and NM. Where about's would I find out this kind of info?

If it helps, here is a link to the fare rules. BNE-TSV Fare Rules

Thanks! :p

Domestic fares don't tend to have MPMs, they have a list of valid routings

For example, on TSV-BNE, it states under routing rules

SPECIFIED ROUTE: 9998
TRAVEL MUST BE NONSTOP OR DIRECT.

even on the J fare

Taking a longer trip, such as TSV-PER, it has

SPECIFIED ROUTE: 9840
TSV-BNE/SYD-PER

and for stopovers and transfers it states

WITHIN AUSTRALIA NO STOPOVERS PERMITTED. NO STOPOVER OCCURS IF PASSENGER TAKES NEXT AVAILABLE FLIGHT WITHIN SAME DAY. NOTE - TRAVEL MUST BE WITHIN THE SAME CALENDAR DAY

UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED UNLIMITED TRANSFERS PERMITTED. NOTE - TRANSFERS PERMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ROUTE MAPS.

The unlimited transfers are of limited value since the route maps severely limit options

Thanks Dave, I had a feeling QF wouldn't have overlooked this or there may've been quite a few AFF'ers taking the long way around for some SC's. ;)

Thanks for the help guys!

I assume this is worded differently for PER-TSV ;) .

Nup!

Code:
OSXI -

STOPOVERS WITHIN AUSTRALIA NO STOPOVERS PERMITTED. NO STOPOVER OCCURS
IF PASSENGER TAKES NEXT AVAILABLE FLIGHT WITHIN SAME DAY.
NOTE - TRAVEL MUST BE WITHIN THE SAME CALENDAR DAY

TRANSFERS UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED UNLIMITED TRANSFERS PERMITTED.
NOTE - TRANSFERS PERMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ROUTE MAPS.
OSXI - SPECIFIED ROUTE: 9840
PER-BNE/SYD-TSV

Actually, the rules seem to prohibit this:
Code:
... TRAVEL MUST BE WITHIN THE SAME CALENDAR DAY ...
If you try to do an online booking PER-TSV you will see the price jumps whenever there is a change of dates during the itinerary.

Fares sometimes appear like this because the ATPCo fare filing system is 'modular' - some categories (like transfers) are used across multiple fares as generic entries while the actual permissions of the fare are restricted in other specific categories (like the route map).
