United to remove passengers who use their phones and iPads on flights without headphones

Shake my head in disbelief at people wandering around the supermarket; phone loudspeaker on full volume airing their "personal" conversations to all & sundry.
As someone who can understand a handful of languages - I find myself in situations where I hear more than anyone needs to ... the person shopping at the supermarket that whinges about their better half to their folks back home, the person in the tram that says weird things about their coworkers, the person on the bus who thinks they are being *careful* using allegory - nah mate, didn't work as good as you thought it would ... you need to start using better metaphor ... or better yet, don't talk about *private* issues in public transport ...

After a couple of mins, I told them politely "hey looks like your headphones are not connected?".

She then goes "Oh, I know. I'm not using headphones".

I then said "can you reduce the volume please? it is too loud".

She then goes "Oh it is not that loud I'm sure".

I then go once again "Can you reduce the volume please, this is a public transport and some passengers are trying to read or rest".

She then goes "It is not that loud" and then proceeds to reduce the volume only slightly.

I give up and go back to looking out the window.

At this point I probably would have discreetly (if possible) asked a flight attendant to get involved.

All I can think of here is the treatment Dr Dao received.

Be careful what you wish for with UA.

I say that to peeps who complain about lack of wifi on board! Of course, pre-downloaded stuff is still readily available…hence a good move on UA.
Difficult from a window seat?
Call button? And the point to the middle seat PAX having trouble reading! 😂

I find it immensely annoying. How stupid, oblivious and entitled must you be to watch stupid videos loudly without your headphones!

Yea ... I see what you mean ... I was not really in the headspace to do anything more at that point in time. Was finishing a very busy 2 day work onsite ... I slept approx 5 mins after that interaction - I was that tired and sort of gave up...

There will be some people who are aware they’re being extremely rude & don’t care, but I reckon there will be plenty of others who don’t even realise it. The probably-75yo bloke watching his Japanese or Korean soapie on the train the other day likely spent the first 40 years of his life somewhere that was 24x7 noise & the concept of “quiet” doesn’t even exist outside of a lab … and if his kids tell him, he probably thinks something like “stupid Gen X WTF do they know?”.

Are they going to give them a parachute or just push them out the door?
This 10000%
so they are only going to remove passengers who play their device loudly until take off??
and once in the air, theyre going to tie you up? or have the police ready upon landing?

No need to beat around the bush. It's Indians. It's a well known phenomena that they spend vast amounts of time just connected to group chats with people joining in/our throughout the day - yes that taxi./uber driver with their earpiece in is part of a conversation.

I guess the beauty of unlimited or plentiful calls/data means this is a viable thing to do.

I lived in North Ryde for over 20 years, I won’t pretend to know which part of Asia people have come from but it was definitely Asian (and not in the English mis-terminology) there. And elderly … it’s not like the Indian Amazon driver who was having a speaker-phone conversation with some woman or other when dropping off a parcel LOUDLY under our bedroom window at 5am the other day ‘cos he was prolly about 30 … to do that around the Ryde area you had to be Asian and over about 65.

Can anyone explain why it has to be a speaker-phone conversation, though?
What’s the need to be yelling into the mic, and to be holding the ‘phone at right-angles from your mouth & have it on speaker? Doesn’t that make it harder to hear the person on the other end of the conversation? Is that the whole point, are these conversations where you want to be able to make fake-static noises into the ‘phone and pretend reception is breaking up?

Initial warning, offer cheap airline headphones, confiscate device if persists, security/police on arrival if kicking off, travel ban. Sorted.
