Today I saw some news that he surely worth exploring and sharing which is that United Airlines is going to make it a condition of flying that they can remove passengers who don't use headphones when watching their phones and/or iPads. I can't believe I'm the only person who finds this irritating, regardless of which class I am flying, but especially in economy.

United Airlines updates contract to remove passengers who don’t use headphones

I am sure this is a common frustration amongst forum members and worthy of investigation by every airline.

Hear hear!!! That is very good news indeed. Hope it spreads to other carriers.
Most people don't want to hear!

(But agree that the use of phones etc without headphones is a scourge of the modern age.)

Shake my head in disbelief at people wandering around the supermarket; phone loudspeaker on full volume airing their "personal" conversations to all & sundry.

Not just that, watching TV!
At least in a supermarket they’re not really affecting anyone else, people are mostly just trying to find things on shelves so the extra noise doesn’t have a lot of impact … but I honestly don’t see the attraction of watching some soapie or other while trying to shop, surely the shopping process interrupts the TV-enjoying process?

I live on the first floor of an apartment block and the balcony overlooks the car park for the businesses downstairs. The number of times I can hear people on the phone having a very deep and meaningful conversation and they think that because nobody else is out there nobody can hear them. 🤦‍♀️

A question though (not for planes, yet) but which is worse, hearing a whole conversation in a public space or someone talking very loudly and only hearing half the conversation (because they are using wireless headphones)? 🤣

Sometimes it's very disconcerting when walking past someone with no phone in hand and no one else around who suddenly yells out some phrase and I am not sure if they are addressing me until I turn and see they have ear pods in their ears and staring in the distance now listening for a response on the phone.

On the flipside, it does allow people who have genuine mental health problems to fit in much better. If they are having a conversation with themselves or one of their other personalities, all they have to do now is wander around with some sort of pods in their ears. Once upon a time people would think them crazy - now hardly anyone bats an eyelid.

Obviously if sprung do this before the doors close then easy to offload, but if they start up this annoying behavior after take-off will it put them on the do not fly list - it should IMO.

I hope this catches on. I can't stand people watching movies without headphones in public spaces. Often I'll ask them to use headphones, but that doesn't always go down well.
I did this on a recent MEL-CBR JQ flight. I was seated on the window. The person on the middle was reading a book. The young lady seated on the aisle, was watching Bridgerton without headphones. I initially thought they had forgotten to plug their headphones or their bluetooth connection dropped. Seen the BT connection dropping one too many times. Happened to me also. When we turn on flight mode, sometimes BT drops and we don't notice. Common/genuine oversight.

After a couple of mins, I told them politely "hey looks like your headphones are not connected?".

She then goes "Oh, I know. I'm not using headphones".

I then said "can you reduce the volume please? it is too loud".

She then goes "Oh it is not that loud I'm sure".

I then go once again "Can you reduce the volume please, this is a public transport and some passengers are trying to read or rest".

She then goes "It is not that loud" and then proceeds to reduce the volume only slightly.

I give up and go back to looking out the window.
