Your link doesn't work for me, drron, however I located the following stories:

The CEOs of United Airlines and US Airways are scheduled to meet Thursday as talks aimed at combining the carriers progress despite concerns that threaten to scuttle the deal, according to two people briefed on the discussions.

Talks between United Airlines and US Airways appear to have fallen apart, marking the second time in a month that United failed to reach a deal with a rival airline and putting the future of industry consolidation in question, people with knowledge of the discussions said Tuesday night.

Ah, found the story you were probably meaning:

As the likelihood of additional mergers in the airline industry dims, big United States carriers face a bleak future of making further cuts on their own to survive in an era of soaring jet fuel prices. Consolidation had been seen as the most palatable way to shrink the industry — by grounding planes, eliminating routes and cutting staffs — to ensure profitability.

The prospect of further mergers, beyond the already-announced Delta Air Lines deal with Northwest Airlines, would have also offered airline executives a ready explanation of why cutbacks in service and staff were needed.

United Airlines and US Airways have long been considered merger candidates. The chief executives of each airline are scheduled to meet Thursday, but there has been little to no recent contact between teams of executives at both companies in talks that began weeks ago.

Still works for me-oh the wonders of computers.Your second link is the story in my link.

I'll have to agree, the wonders of computers  . When I clicked your link it told me the link wasn't available and may have been older than 7 days or archived. So checking the archives, I found the three stories (even though they were all current and < 7 days old). You're correct, my second story has the same link. Today when I clicked on your original link, it worked

United Airlines said it plans to eliminate about 950 pilot jobs beginning this summer in addition to an already announced plan to cut 1,600 salaried positions and reduce its fleet....
