Back in the 70s I bought an Isaac Hayes LP, Hot Buttered Soul.
It featured a long track called 'Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic', obviously a contrived word that I gave no more thought for 50+ years until, for some reason, today - which, when I looked it up it led to 'sesquipedalian':

Definition of Sesquipedalian

Sesquipedalian refers to:
  • Long Words: Words that have many syllables or are lengthy in nature.
  • Language Style: A style characterized by the use of long words, often seen as unnecessarily complex.

Etymology

The term originates from the Latin word sesquipedalis, which literally means "a foot and a half long." It combines sesqui- (one and a half) and pedalis (measuring a foot).

Historical Background

  • The first known use of "sesquipedalian" dates back to 1656.
  • It was popularized by literary critics in the 17th century to criticize writers who used unnecessarily long words.
