From ABC News: "The Boeing 737-800, which belongs to Ukraine International Airlines, crashed near Imam Khomeini International Airport and burst into flames after a fire struck one of its engines, said Qassem Biniaz, a spokesman for Iran's Road and Transportation Ministry. The pilot then lost control of the plane, sending it crashing into the ground, Mr Biniaz said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency."

Probably hard to work out if they're telling the truth if the only information is coming from the government who may or may not be responsible...

I also hope the missile story is only speculation but I think we may be in for some prolonged troubled times in the Middle East in any event, at least as long as Trump is in the White House. Just so horrible for the passengers and crew on board and their families.
The missiles were fired by Iran, not Trump...

QF10 overflew Iranian airspace last night
I can’t check when it was in Iranian airspace
PS752 (IKA-KBP) departed at 0612 (GMT +3.30)
The Iranian missiles were launched around 0130hrs.

I would say nothin to do with the retaliatory missiles

0130hrs =2230hrs GMT
Over 10hrs after QF10 departed LHR.
Likely QF10 would be over the Indian Ocean at the time of missile attack

Air France has just announced it will suspend flying over both Iraqi and Iranian airspace. The Ukrainian 737 manifest included 63 Canadians ant three British amongst the 170 on board.

I found the bloke that gets his news from facebook

How much revenue does Iran get from airlines for overflight fees?
This article suggests a lot of forex.:

Sanctions bite harder when Iran fires missiles which results in airlines avoiding its airspace. Trump wins!

[OT]The same one that said Benghazi was due to protests over a cartoon? And the same one that said she was under enemy fire in Bosnia when the most she received were flowers from some Bosnian children?[/OT]

Will the American NTSB get an invite to be part of the AirCrashInvestigation?

I would speculate that this is very unlikely to be a mechanical failure of some sort. Some of the debris images anecdotally indicate shrapnel punctures.

Very funny.

Shrapnel going in, or out? From the hold, or an engine? Given what the structure just went though, there'd have to be punctures. The cause is unlikely to be something we can guess at right now.

The damage appears similar to the 737 that crashed at Rostov. That hit the ground at a very steep angle, and fast. The video, assuming it's accurate, seems to show the aircraft shedding items. So, in part at least, it seems to have broken up in flight. I wonder how this compares to the 320 in Egypt.

Airport ops don't seem to be as affected as I'd expect. This aircraft took off at virtually the same time as a 320 freighter. Another aircraft (Qatar) departed about 30 minutes later.

I wonder, given that Iran is not willing to hand out the orange boxes, how likely would they be to EVER admit having accidentally shot down a civilian aircraft? Zero chance would my guess so we might never REALLY know for sure.

NB: I'm not saying it was shot down by a missile, that's anyone's guess at this stage. I'm just saying if he official Iranian explanation will be anything else, we'd have to take this with a BIG grain of salt.

They’ve indicated they aren’t going to hand them to the USA. Have they also ruled out handing them to the Ukraine, Canada, or EU facilities that can read black boxes? I can understand not wanting to hand to the USA.

Would they even have the ability to read/ interpret the data from the orange boxes, and given the current relationship with the USA, will they give them access to it ?

Edit MEL_traveller has just answered it

Yes, I can understand this too! True that- EU or Canada would be trustworthy enough. Let's see where they will end up then!

There's a limited number of countries that can read the data, and with whom they have reasonable relations.

Within the EU, France and Germany. Outside, of that perhaps Russia.

I have a suspicion that they will show a normal flight, and suddenly end, with no viable information.
