A Boeing 737 belonging to Ukraine International Airlines has crashed due to technical problems after take-off from Iran’s Imam Khomeini airport with 180 passengers and crew aboard, the semi-official Fars news agency has tweeted.

There was no further information immediately available following Wednesday’s crash.

Oups- that was posted at the same time. I’ll put the popcorn away again, this has just turned super sober and serious! 😣

Now the question is- can it REALLY be that these incidents are unrelated?

My gut feeling is telling me “no way” but my gut had said the same thing when the second MH 777 went down and alas, it was total coincidence.

That would almost imply Russian interference though being a Ukraine Airline.

Plenty of fake news around but a Jordanian news report has stated it may have been accidentally shot down by an Iranian missile.

Without knowing if the video all over twitter is authentic - if it is, I doubt there would be any survivors.

All I can say is that I hope to God it is mechanical otherwise things in Iran will escalate very quickly. RIP to those that died.

So the threads got split up- fair enough.

The big question though is whether they are REALLY separate topics

Not sure which video you mean, but the main one is from their National news service, as well as pictures, so is authentic.

Having seen the video of it on fire it would certainly seem believable. Presumably this happened at about the same time as the missile strikes, so could have been an accident by Iran?

At this stage, one thread is a news item about the FAA issuing a NOTAM regarding overflying several areas of the Middle East and the broader implications that will have on travel. The other thread (this one) is about a Ukrainian International Airlines flight that has come down in Iran. They are two different stories, but they might share a common narrative. That doesn't mean they should be cohabiting the same thread.

These videos are a Frequent Flyer’s nightmare.

If I ever wonder how “I will go down” (and I promise, I don’t!), this will be EXACTLY it. Up the front of that plane, that is.

Latest speculation is that the Iranian missile defence shot it down by accident, as it appears to have happened around the same time Iran was firing at the allied bases in Iraq. Does seem strange (but not impossible?) that it would already be a fireball before descending to crash if it wasn't some kind of bomb or missile strike.

It does appear to have happened around the same time as Iran's missile strikes. I think it's more likely that it was accidentally shot down (or bombed) than mechanical issues. Although I don't know that the Iranians would own it?

I've felt a bit squiffy about flying over the Middle East (and more recently Ukraine) for years. Just figure that if it's my time then it's just as well I have a will and other contingencies in place ;)

From ABC News: "The Boeing 737-800, which belongs to Ukraine International Airlines, crashed near Imam Khomeini International Airport and burst into flames after a fire struck one of its engines, said Qassem Biniaz, a spokesman for Iran's Road and Transportation Ministry. The pilot then lost control of the plane, sending it crashing into the ground, Mr Biniaz said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency."

Probably hard to work out if they're telling the truth if the only information is coming from the government who may or may not be responsible...

I also hope the missile story is only speculation but I think we may be in for some prolonged troubled times in the Middle East in any event, at least as long as Trump is in the White House. Just so horrible for the passengers and crew on board and their families.
