Uber drivers at CNS routinely cancelling rides to manipulate surge pricing

Do you prefer Didi or Uber in Cairns (for drivers)?

I’ve never had any luck with Didi even though I see cars on the map.
Same, found Didi as dead as a dodo. I keep getting a message basically saying the airport is a no go zone for Didi (so the rest of Cairns is OK...?)

Uber, if it works and someone answers your call.

It appears that Didi can do dropoffs but not pickups.

The Airport needs a bus of some sort. I see the local MP is looking into that but who knows how long. The airport parking fees are not great for locals, at least Melbourne still has $14 per day.

I see most walking down that long airport road assuming to avoid the high cost of everything transport. On nearly all occasions I note someone gives them a free ride to the end, quite a dangerous road to try and walk down.

Didi didn’t want to pay/sign up with the airport so their pickup is in palm cove

About $30 is probably a little over the average but that is school kicking out time and the hospital shifts finish around then also. The driver has no idea where you are going till you get in the car so there is no reason to cancel the fare. Uber will tell them if its over a 30 minute trip which are far and few between in Cairns but still doesn't give the destination.

No schools or hospitals between the Airport and Smithfield.
The traffic jams are between the CBD and Airport from 3pm till about 6pm.
Coming IN not so bad but going TO Airport best leave before 3pm.

Did, you get paid a little more and know your destination before picking the passenger up. Didi is a lot more popular nowadays.

I didn't say there were, i've lived in Cairns for twenty years and drive for a living so know when the jams are! At that time of day the cars are busy because of the schools and hospital change over so the surge is often on.

Been there, done that.

A nice rental car recovery driver stopped and took me to my accommodation, which was on his way.

I wouldn't rely on it....

Lived here for 40 years....

You should have put the word SURGE in your answer then, so we know you are referring to price gouging not traffic jams. I took it mean the school/hospital traffic caused the higher price.

So if the lazy brats just walked home we would all be better off!

And you should learn to read and comprehend instead of me having to explain it to you. You seem to have got your blood pressure raised over a simple statement because you got it wrong but the problem is, you seem to have contradicted yourself also! It's not price gouging, it's supply and demand, same as air travel, hotel rooms etc. You don't have to use the service. Cya, i'm taking no further part in this conversation with you.

Looks like the main bus company providing transfers, Exemplar, has gone bust. They had nearly 30 vehicles.

Uber might be a little more busy now.
How could they go bust? Too expensive to start with? Internal corruption? Bullied by all the rideshare and taxi drivers? Iranian crisis push them over the edge?

Port Douglas and northern beaches transfers mostly...yes they went bust.

Mainly...no tourists. CNS is very quiet.
Not looking like improving either with the war and fuel situation.
Wet weather, BOM forecasts a cyclone every other weekend.
The few tourists here leave.

They just got $160000 off govt as well.
Price of fuel....penalty rates for weekends...lack of drivers...may be other reasons.

Not sure how taxi and uber can bully a bus company....

There is also another bus transfer company called Excelllence...not the same.

When Uber X was growing and noticeably encroaching on the taxi industry in Brisbane, there were (perhaps only anecdotal) many reports of Uber drivers being intimidated, harassed or otherwise subjected to bullying-like behaviour by taxi drivers. Examples included being yelled at (obscene or otherwise), being parked in or blocked in by taxis, vehicles being keyed or spat on, bogus police calls on Uber vehicles, amongst others. Some of those actions were also directed at the passengers of Ubers. Sort of died off by now, especially since many ex-taxi drivers also went over to Uber and Didi.

Just throwing stuff out there. I wouldn't really expect taxis and Ubers to bully the bus company, especially if the costs are very different (and different purposes, too), but I'm amazed how the bus company with the biggest share would go bust.

I’d imagine like many small businesses, costs and inflation coming them from all corners. Wages, Fuel, Maintenance, Airport Fees. Everywhere you look they are getting smashed by cost hikes, only so far one can raise tickets before it’s just becomes uncompetitive. Not really many productivity levers they can pull either, especially in weather downturns etc, just running the same network with lower revenue. These sort of operators often have agreements with airports also, like this one did.

Cairns is notorious for ups and downs in demand. I read another low approaching possibly later next week.

Plenty more transfer companies than Exemplar, Uber is always busy whatever..

It's the wet season, lows come and go, they been around for thirty years so know the game. Cairns is busier than its ever been for this time of year, we'll have wait and see why they've gone under, no good guessing.

Cairns very quiet? what you talking about? Wet weather? It's the wet season! I've been here twenty years in the city centre and Cairns is the busiest it's ever been for this time of year!
