Uber comes to Australia

Any chance they launch Uber X here in Australia?

They seem to have launched it in Sydney. It seems to be called either "Uber Low Cost" or UberPop. PLANT seems to have found the information - it seems anyone can sign up to be a driver if they are aged over 24 and have a car less than 9 years old.
Not sure I want to ride in a car like that ...

And down here in Melbourne as well.

Conceptually, the feedback feature should sort out the difficult drivers.
Like ebay in the early days , feedback can be a very powerful tool as long as management pay attention.

Yep I provide feedback on every driver, I have received a few responses from Uber which is always good

Uber is in Brisbane now, and it's free for the next couple of weeks...

Unfortunately there's no Uber Black, just regular 'Uber' – but free is free! :)

Took it for a spin the other day, and loved my driver's comment: "Look at those suckers in a taxi, don't they realise they could be travelling for free??" (The Uber drivers still get paid obviously...)

My experience is that Uber takes their feedback very seriously.

If you leave anything less than a 3 star feedback without comments then Uber will normally contact you for more information I have found. I have even been given credit on my account after a complaint about a driver and his service.

Good to know.

Great news, definitely worth a try. It is great to see Cabcharge and their 10% credit card fee getting some competition! They have had it too good for too long

Review of the new Uber low cost, or UberX service.

Interesting that they aren't overly forthcoming on insurance.

I would have to say my experience in Melbourne of the low cost option was very much the same. It was a good clean car, but the driver and car really reminded me of what low cost meant. The funny thing was using the low cost option was cheaper than what my bus fare home would have been and 20 minutes faster. The biggest issue has been availability as I am rarely able to get one of the low cost cars otherwise would be no longer catching the bus.

I emailed uber (purely out of curiosity) to provide some details on driving for the with the low cost model. I'm interested to see what insurance setup they have (as id imagine all comprehensive policies prohibit commercial use), however they haven't answered me.

So I finally downloaded Uber to my iPhone and decided to make a booking. The fare quoted from my place to MEL airport (~30 min drive) was $101. Now, unless "black car" means a Rolls Royce or Maybach, I would say it's a bit overpriced... I tried looking for a cheaper option but couldn't find any :(
I usually book HCs (Holden, Mercedes, Lexus, whatever the company has available on the day) and they charge only $70 flat rate.

Yep to/from the airport is not the best with Uber, plus I want to know that my driver will be there and not have to worry about when will he/she turn up etc etc

Have just returned home from a weekend in MEL... interesting that I could see the UberX option in my app (as someone who's used Uber a number of times before in different cities), whereas my partner could only see the Uber Black option – even after taking a ride in one (albeit in Melbourne).

Both apps were up to date, so perhaps trying to avoid Taxi Council people posing as passengers...?

That is interesting ChrisFlyer... perhaps you need a riding history before you can use UberX?
