Uber comes to Australia

Syd has uberx, ubertaxi, uberblack and uberlux.
The number of ubertaxi cabs has dropped, presumably in response to uberx

Does anyone still use Uber in Qld seeing they do not have a licence ? An interesting article in today's Courier mail

The State Government sent Uber a cease and desist notice earlier this year and has issued more than $200,000 in fines to 76 drivers for driving without an authorisation or providing a taxi service without a licence.

A friend of mine continues to rave about it - she used it last night to meet us for dinner.

It's gone downhill a lot since it started. They seem to now be very dodgy older cars driven around by taxi driver dropouts. I've had one car recently that stank of fuel and the driver who clearly had no idea what he was doing. It seemed like a good idea to start with... But it's turned into a disappointment.

I used uber today for the first time. I'll do the same for my trip home. Brand new Camry. Driver was polite. Fare was 50% less than a taxi. I'll continue to use them from now on.

my recent uberx rides have all been very good, no problems

Now exactly which Uber did you use?

I'm an uber newb and booked using the Apple Store app. The receipt says uber x cars $8 fare. Both vehicles were Toyota Camrys. I've previously been charged $16 for the same journey in a regular taxi. However, I just did a fare comparison using the yellow cabs app which comes in at $2 more($10). My guess is the fare estimator does not accurately factor in traffic flow. A friend was pretty happy with a $25 fare from Moorooka-Milton.

I'm not sure legislatively how long they've got but it seems good from my perspective.

you mean....not sure how long Taxi's have left ;)

Absolutely, the end cost will be the determining factor for the industry. Both the taxi industry and Uber are missing the point of their service.

Uberx ride again today - it was ok, nice toyota aurion with leather seats, southbank, melbourne to melbourne airport... cost $54 includes toll fee ($7). Taxi I would expect approx $50-$55 plus toll (plus cc surcharge) so its a bit cheaper than a cab still. The driver was quite lacking in knowledge though, like the very simple task of getting from southbank onto the freeway to get to the airport for example. Even how to get to departures level at airport required directing in. As he was polite and car was nice I still gave 4 stars, but the lack of knowledge of getting to the airport lost a star.

My uberX experiences in BNE were pretty decent. One newby who needed the GPS, but clean new car. However for the $6 fare I'm nowhere near complaining. Other was a courier driver who does UberX on the weekends. Really professional and fantastically friendly.

I'm going to keep using it.

Uber is good for competition...i think we all agree on that and taxis need a overhaul

What concerns me is taxi drivers do advanced driving courses, do uber drivers?

We know taxi drivers have police clearances, do uber drivers?

Can we guarantee uber drivers have 100% insurances?

On the other hand we have taxi drivers refusing to produce licenses and the operating company not wanting to know anything about it.
