I find myself often considering the UAE as being Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but are the other emirates worth visiting?

Are they safe? Enjoyable? Interesting? Exciting? Different? Accessible? Welcoming?

I've had feedback previously on Sharjah and that left the impression (rightly or wrongly) that it's strict and uninviting. Is that representative of the others?
