UA Mileage Plus - Purchase Points to top up. Any suggestions

Welcome to AFF defcon1 :)

How many points are you trying to keep from expiring? It may not be worth spending more to save them.

That said, another option is credit a hotel stay to Mileage Plus.

A word of warning though. Its risky relying on partner activity to post in time to stop the miles from expiring. Many take weeks to post, or are only done after the end of each month.

If you need to get points quickly its safest either flying on the airline (not a partner) or buying miles through the airline.

Thanks for your welcome and thoughts Kiwi Flyer.

I have 56,000 points so worth saving. I think I will take your advice and buy points directly from UA. I am concerned about a delay in getting the points from the UA partner and UA killing my points in the meantime.

I think I'll just buy the minimum 1,000 points for now. Play it safe.

United has a lot of shopping partners so perhaps you should look into these and see if there is anything you want to buy online. The partners are all listed on my website - Andrew's Frequent Flyer Resources under the comparison tables.

Thanks Andrew, I ultimately decided to purchase the minimum 1,000 points from UA to keep my account active. I found that the UA shopping partners rarely offered shipping to Australia (I had wanted to get a magazine subscription from a UA partner but they wouldn't deliver to Oz).

I did also review your site back in March and found it useful but ultimately the lack of shipping of goods to Oz was the killer. In the end safer (and easier) to purchase some points.

If only UA had some local shopping partners in Oz!

Good advice. Hotels (in Japan) sometimes take over two months to post points to my ANA FF account. Purchasing the 1000 miles was the smart move.
