The airline, not the AFF member (hi tyrolean :) ).

Have a few flights booked with them later this year as part of a Star Alliance airpass, so I thought I'd do a bit of research on them.

I see they've had a bit of a chequered history financially, and it appears that all 'Austrian Airlines' flights are in fact operated by its subsidiary Tyrolean since 2012. I guess this would be the same as all Qantas flights being operated by Jetstar - you'd get rid of all the Qantas employees (on higher wages / conditions) and everyone who wants to stay would have to be re-employed by Jetstar on lower terms, but you would still have Qantas livery on planes and uniforms.

The web site is kinda bizarre. The 'Tyrolean' web site is only in German - no English version (but Google of course can translate.). The 'Austrian' is obviously more 'corporate' focused, and is in English (as well as German)! Then there is the 'Austrian.com' site, in English, where you finally can find some info on lounges etc.

Can anyone help with some question I have, please:

* Are there flights which are 'branded' as 'Tyrolean', or is it all the one fleet and operation - 'Austrian' on the outside, Tyrolean on the inside?

* Is 'Austrian' a LCC in disguise (well, disguise to those unfamiliar, like me)?

* Do they 'misbehave' like a LCC - ie cancel flight with low load factors, poor customer service, cheapest option at every turn (like not using airbridges at airports)?

Any other pros / cons? (I'm flying OS: KRK-VIE ; VIE-SBZ-VIE (Sibu, Romania); VIE-VCE)

Tyrolean flights will be covered by EU261. so flights into and out of the EU will be offer appropriate protections.
 
I was under the impression that the LH group transferred all OS operations to Tyrolean to create a lower cost base as the legacy OS contracts were too expensive. I've seen some decent trip reports about OS on FT, so maybe have a look over there.

You are right about the reason for transfer of the ops to Tyrolean. This is the main reason for my queries - am I flying on a LCC or not? Good suggestion about FT - I see that a number of others have already posted on the same issue :)
 
My impression is that it should be a full service operation. But having never flown them, I don't know for sure.
 
Just to close the loop - the replies I got on FT is that 'Austrian operated by Tyrolean' IS a 'full service' airline, rather than a LCC.

I'll be doing a trip report, so will let those interested know!
