Two QF A380s to be scrapped

Alan Joyce announced this morning:
- 5 A380s will be bought back into service from mid-next year. The first two between Sydney & LA in July and the next 3 to London via Singapore from November.
- 2 will be retired.
- Other 5 will be bought back by early 2024.

I would suspect VH-OQE would be one of the two being the only A380 not repainted and un-refurbished. The other 2 A380s not repainted VH-OQH and VH-OQI have been refurbished.

No love for MEL from QF again. Sad. Would love to do MEL-LHR on the QF A380 again.

But SYD flights is better than nothing.

Assume they are thinking the 787s too large/premium?
And maybe have that smaller aircraft on the LAX-JFK extension, like they used to with the BNE based 747s.
 
Wonder what'll happen to the 4x 787 base agreement QF had with the Qld government if they plan to replace the premium heavy 789s with the modified extended range A332s which are a bit more Y heavy.

Obviously thinking leisure instead of the premium/business crowd will drive demand, especially from BNE. Makes sense to use the A332s as they have about 100 more economy seats.

Lets hope an update is in the plan too. Last time I flew one of those old A332s from SIN to MEL the tiny low res IFE screen just did my head in..

With 251 seats in total (27 Business, 0 Premium, 224 Economy) compared to 236 seats in total (42 Business, 28 Premium, 166 Economy), the 330-200s also have a larger capacity than the 787-9s. Is this about getting a few more seats on the market, or are some reconfigs on the horizon? Less seats may help extend the range, too.

I assume they have sufficient 789s to otherwise operate BNE-LAX/SFO and, therefore, a lack of 789s is not the driver?

I also wonder how different these changes compare to what was required when the 330-200s used to fly AKL-LAX.
 
Also very interesting was Qantas has said they plan to fly A330-200s between Brisbane and SFO/LAX from next year. They are in the final stages with Airbus in extending the flying range of those aircraft. Fascinating times for sure.

Looks like first flight is currently BNE-LAX on 19/12/21.

The first few months have 332s on Wed, Fri and Sun, ex BNE. The 789 flights on the other days of the week look to be zeroed out at the moment.

What is interesting however, is that pulling a seatmap of the QF A330 flights to the US in December 2021 reveals a seatmap that is missing a chunk of 20 seats in the middle block between rows 33 - 37.

Anyone remember what they used to do on the AKL-LAX flights?
For the Asian flights they've used the pairs in Row 37, but I suspect Hawaii needs a flat rest.
(None of the A330s have above/below cabin rests)
