Two QF A380s to be scrapped

Plenty of life in them and I could imagine people going out of their way to travel in one in 10 years time.
If the domestic network has shown us anything when international borders do reopen give it 6 months before things just go crazy. In June/July last year just as we were able to travel again there were a lot of empty seats on several BNE-CNS flights. Now every BNE-CNS flight is completely full and prices are insane.

Once it's "safe" again and people are reassured they will be able to return home without being thrown into quarantine these A380's will be quite useful.

For the QF A380s to get back in the air we need to go back to pre-pandemic international travel restrictions or pretty close to it i.e. no cap on the number of tourists coming in.

I just feel dreadful for a couple of posters on here who have sad that now it is highly unlikely they will ever travel internationally ever again due to age, let alone on a QF A380… it’s been a sucky time :(

+1
I hope QF keep all 12, seeing as how COVID has made them much rarer. Plenty of life in them and I could imagine people going out of their way to travel in one in 10 years time.
In 10 years time, even the youngest of them will have hit its 'use by' date. I suspect engine support will be the first big issue, as the 380 is the only type that uses these engines.

My bolding...

Given the lockdowns pretty much ruling out flying to any other State from Brisbane - either currently or in the near future - then no surprise going north from Brisbane is near fully booked.

I wonder how many are people trying to use up their Q flight credits or FF points?

Shame it is such a short journey (relatively), and assume Cairns Airport NOT able to take the A380 - otherwise wouldn't that be a welcome sight for Cairns' tourism business!

The A380 would be totally uneconomical for the BNE to CNS route even if CNS could take the A380.

If demand is high enough they could use the A330 or possibly even the 787 that QF would consider ahead of the A380.

The only reason we’d see A380 on domestic again would be for getting crews back up to speed quickly ahead of it resuming international flights or if those international flights resume for some farewell flights ahead of the A380 being retired for good.

Totally concur, but if Cairns were capable, it would be nice.

I'm sure AJ could convince Barnaby to fund it... ;)

Has anyone heard whether Q has sold (or tried to) any of the contracted A380 spares? Took a big write-off on the spares in 2019/20.

Domestic travel is all about high frequency schedules so an A380 will never run on BNE-CNS
Once borders open the BNE outbound traffic to CNS will go to other places and the BNE-CNS route will basically collapse.
CNs will have to compete against the other tourist destinations.

Basically this:

I wouldn't say CNS would collapse entirely.

They had a few flights per day on BNE-CNS for example prior to COVID, back when CNS would be competing against the 'DPS Bogan Bus', NAN, NZ destinations and nearby Pacific Island destinations. OOL also had daily CNS flights pre-covid.

MCY-CNS would be an interesting route to watch when Int'l borders open though, despite the long requests for the route prior to Alliance opening the route (3x weekly) in mid 2020 with some subsidy from both local councils.

I know people live to bash Bali as the playground for Aussie bogans but there also is a luxury edge to it now - one of the reasons Qantas found a market there again.

I'd say the 'Cashed up Bogan' factor also contributed to QF returning to DPS. '

They contribute to the higher Y yield factors as well as those willing to pay for domestic J recliners initially until SYD-DPS got the old A330 J product.

Well MCY isn't doing well.13 flights on the schedule for today, only 1 operating.Tomorrow is better with 2 out of 16 operating.
VA are doing a lot better than the QF group with 2 of the arrivals - one from SYD and one from MEL.the only JQ flight is from ADL.

Yes, but do any of them have enough pax to cover their costs?
