From No News:

A PASSENGER plane slammed into buildings at a Moscow airport after making an emergency landing last night, killing two people and injuring dozens, Russian investigators said.
The Dagestan Airlines Tupolev plane carrying 163 people overshot the runway after landing at Domodedovo airport outside Moscow, with all three of its engines failing, authorities said.

Having seen footage of the remains of the plane on the news, I’m surprised there were only 2 fatalities. Looked bad. There doesn’t appear to be any signs of a fire luckily (or did they run out of fuel)?

It's always trotted out as a rumour as to why multiple engines would fail...as is fuel exhaustion.

On the other hand, the engines are all very near each other, which gives rise to lots of other mechanisms for failure.

Nonews is now reporting that its due possible human error - fuel pump problem.

The crew possibly forgot to switch on fuel pumps while taking off, allowing air to enter the system, a law enforcement source told the Interfax news agency.

"All the specialists agree that probably the reason for what happened was human error"

Nothing like hanging before the investigation.

For what it's worth, engines normally run without the fuel pumps turned on, though I guess the location on the Tu154 might make that a bit hard.

But, after an engine failure, and especially a second one, with no nasties, then I'd expect just about every pilot in the world to look at the fuel system set up. And if the problem is just a failure to turn pumps on, then resetting them would have you well on the way to restarting.

Sure, it isn't impossible, but I'll bet it turns out to be something else entirely.
