I'm hoping someone can give me some advice! My father and I are taking a trip to LA next May and we would like to fly one-way business class. Between us we have approximately 860,000 QF points.

We are looking at flying out on 11th May and returning on 21st May (dates are fairly flexible though). It doesn't bother us if we fly from/to MEL, SYD or BNE.

Can someone please give me some advice on what we can do?

Cheers.

Slatgs - you need to have a play with the booking engine - I did a quick check on Classic Awards and there is not much choice from Aus to LAX in that period - probably most of the seats have long gone. But rthere are possibilities - Melbourne departure looks the most promising. Could get a 1st class seat for 288000 points each

Switch to the US site for a return flight on points. Or, a) use your friendly TA, or b) spend the points to get a phone booking with QF itself.

Cheers, and good luck.

What about booking economy (S) or Red Edeal seats and paying for them and then using points to upgrade.

I have thought about trying that but we are both Bronze so I don't like our chances of getting an upgrade.

I've had a play around with it and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot available. I rang QF the other day and they said just keep my eye on it and see if anything becomes available.

Thought I would try here and see if anyone had any ideas. Cheers.

I would grab the 2 May 11th QF93 First tickets either as FASA or Classic costing about 310,000 or 288,000 points depending on whether you need Status upgrade
There is one May 24th First for half of the above points so grab that for one return.
The last seat may need to be a Premium Economy purchase which will be upgraded to J on points request with a pretty good chance of success.
Factors to remember:
Cancelling is cheap at 5000 points.
First is nice/very nice.
All are out of MEL.

There is also a day apart J seat May10 and May11.

If you are Bronze with 860k points can you run up points quickly on credit cards?
That did not seem to add up

Thanks for your help, i'll have a look tonight and see what I can do.

We can run up points at a pretty good rate - probably 80 to 100k a month between us.

Well Slats7 you could run up points on SQ thru Westpac Platinum to overcome the getting back to Oz issue.
I just booked Mrscove in J and F 12 days from take off on SQ for LAX trip.
My thought here is avoid the fare purchase for your return if nothing is available thru QF.

The way back !!!

A always book the Y+ or apply for the upgrade on the way back because it means I actually don't mind getting on the plane after a holiday...

If it went to LA on J, had a great holiday and had to go into Econ on the journey back I may not get on the flight...

Way there you'll be looking forward to the holiday so getting on the plane shouldn't be an issue...

Another alternative may be to fly HK or NRT then LAX.

Usually LAX and LHR direct flights need a year in advance for classic award seating.
