"The government plans to add more airports as well, including three more airports for Istanbul, to increase passenger capacity to 400 million a year by 2023, from 165 million today."

"Turkish Airlines serves more than 200 destinations around the world and has seen passenger growth more than double to 32.6 million in just six years."

The Wall Street Journal, Wednesday, September 12, 2012, pp 12-13.

Guess they are doing something right.

Doing something right?

The answer to that question is not necessarily yes or no, but to me it seems like an ambitious attempt to create a global hub in IST, and TK a much wider, global carrier. It's near the Middle East, already vying for a lot of attention as a global hub, though IST appeals a lot more as a stopover destination (intended or unintended) than the other current hubs like DXB, AUH or DOH.

Three new airports for IST would boost the total to five, IIRC. That's massive in anyone's language (unless each airport will be kept a trim size).

Not too dissimilar to London. LTN, LHR, STN, LGW, SEN....

Yes, but that's London. :) The decision for Istanbul to get to the same situation as somewhere like London in terms of airports is not so obvious (it's definitely much more fascinating).

Don't disagree with you there!

I am sitting in IST THY lounge at the moment waiting for my fourth flight with TK in the last week. It is still quite busy considering it is after 10pm. I have been travelling J all the way (BKK - xIST - MXP - xIST - BKK) and the service has been outstanding. I am a convert. Now I just have to keep WP _and_ *G!

Thanks for the report, JessicaTam. I'm just working up to booking some flights, so good to have the first hand assessment.

Thanks to all here for the extraordinarily beneficial tip. :p

Welcome to the TK club. Now you just have to get to the IST lounge to see what all the fuss is about... It's worth it, trust me!

A *G card hasn't arrived for me - that's months now, and counting.

Oh well, maybe I'll demand it when I really need to use it / could use it. Otherwise, TK might just force me to fly them in order to get the card.

My card turned up in about 3-4 weeks. Maybe an email to customer service. I emailed them once, and they were prompt with their reply.

I don't have a card either, have emailed them several times with no reply.
I'm flying OZ on Monday next week and crediting the miles to TK. I'm going to take a print out of my Elite status with me just in case ( and also so that I can Lounge hop to SQ just to be nosy ;) )
