Turkish Airlines for Australia

I have flown the 738 in J and whilst the seat was average (think BA Club Europe) the service was top notch. I cautiously peered over my shoulder at one point towards the back of the plane, and was reassured that (for me) it was worth it.

My flights were MXP-IST so similar sort of length/service standard to your itinerary. But of course, YMMV.

Not OZ - BUT - need 2 tix DUB-IST then IST-ZRH shortly - anybody with exp on these routes lately? Specifically on TK is J at all worth the sugar v Y? DUB-IST Y €479 / J €810.
Whilst this may be a week late due to a realigning of the TK award chart, intra EU award flights in J were/are 12,500 via IST. I am not sure if you can stretch the layover, though. You can buy TK points on special from time to time

A bit of reading on FT.

WOW - thanks JT - *A reds never dawned on me - another reason I love AFF - full of clever people.

Looks like I will need to call Crystal in KF morrow morn - I'll see what she can flush out for me.

Cruiser, what are *A "reds"?

Cruiser Elite:
Have just flown TK J from Valencia to Istanbul, then on to Tel Aviv. Well worth the extra for J, in this case. New fit out on both legs, comfortable seats, full meal service even on the shorter second flight, excellent in flight service, priority boarding (of course :)), transfer by bus to terminal on one leg - with smaller vehicle for J pax, which left immediately all J people were on board. Good all round experience.

To to my shame, I can't be confident of the aircraft type - and, if I guess, it's sure to be wrong.

I have 2 intra-Europe TK flights coming next week, both in J.
Will update and post photos as part of my *A trip report.

Saw this thread come back from the grave and thought the Turks must have finally got here.

Are they still trying to get here?

Sounds like IST is your destination, but worth remembering if transiting for longer than 5hrs you can, subject to availability, book a day room in the business lounge to catch some rest. The old ones were a little noisy due to being directly across from the shower facilities. The rooms in the new lounge might be better. I'd be interested to read if anyone has availed themselves this facility since the new lounge opened?

Yes we are staying in IST for 7 nts Prozac - I am badly in need of a bath! :D
Too much information thanks Cruiser...;)
I have only ever transited but I think if I were to visit I would do the Turkish bath thing. With some research you can get the real McCoy with the bruising massage.

My folks were somewhat caught out on this.

Apparently a day room can only be booked for transits between 4 and 8 hours (I think that's the right time limits). Any longer than that and TK may also offer hotel accommodation outside of the airport, i.e. you must apply for and pay visa procedures in advance.

If you qualify for the hotel option rather than day room, but you cannot obtain a visa or choose not to, you can't obtain a day room as a substitute (from what I understand). Also, I believe in some cases TK will, for the purposes of determining whether you are eligible for day room or hotel, use the flight schedule rather than your itinerary timing. For example, let's say you arrive in IST to transit to another international destination operated by a TK flight. The next scheduled TK flight to this destination would be a 2 hr transit, but you are on a later flight resulting in a 5 hr transit. TK may interpret this to mean you are not eligible for a day room.

I had a bit of a tete-a-tete via the TK feedback system which lead me to this information.
