The Turkish government lives in its own room and has forced the country in to it as well with disastrous economic management. They need Russian tourist money and if they can soak up those left who can afford to go who now can't visit Mexico, Mauritius, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali, Greece, Spain, Italy or Egypt then they will do everything in their power to bring that money in to the country.

Not great that the Russians can go on holiday while on the other side of the Black Sea Mariupol is being blown to bits.

Conversely the Turks are arming Ukraine with armed drones and is a member of NATO.

Turkey had better be careful in case the EU and US take a broad definition of "supporting Russia" and put some sanctions/directions on support provided to TK by Airbus and Boeing.

That's not happening.

Back room discussions will be the feature not headline grabbing sanctions against a NATO member.

You have to remember Erdogan is nothing but a populist.

I don't want to go OT but Must...Fly!, is Turkey still as safe for tourists as it was a few years ago when I visited?

I was in Turkiye in Feb, I felt very safe and comfortable. I was in Antalya to see the sights in the off season and Istanbul for dental work. Based on conversations with normal everyday people their sympathies are all with Ukraine. The economy is really bad, hospitality workers desperately need work. What heads of state do and what normal people do are two different things. I’m going back to Turkiye in September to see friends and finish the dental work.

I really don't know as I have no comparison nor am I an intelligence service. However all I can say is when I was there I did not feel unsafe at any point other than in the van on the way back to the airport...

You have just reminded me of a couple of similar trips to their airport....

Also having to argue with a cab driver who refused to switch on his meter.

@Tiki, how was Antalya? Likely going there in a month, mainly for the golf, but what else would you recommend? Many Russian holiday makers… 😁

Oh, and what’s the going rate for a Turkish visa these days?

In a month the tourist season should be pretty busy. It's not my type of scene so I purposely chose to go there in February. Hardly any foriegn tourists, a few Turkish tourists. I wasn't there for the beach lol. Also I got a killer deal on the Crowne Plaza, 6000 points per night for 5 nights. The old city, Kaleici is a nice wander around, also the 1 hour boat cruises near the port. I also liked the Olympos cable car as there was snow at the top and living in Brisbane I never see snow! I also saw the historical places like Perge, Aspendos, a waterfall. And there was a nice Turkish nightclub in Konyalti, I went with friends and I love Turkish music! Not a tourist in sight!

Just back from Istanbul - lots of Russian tourists about. Now I know why!
Felt very safe and welcomed by all the restaurant and cafe owners.
I used www.istanbulshuttleport.com for my transfers from and to airport
Very clean and efficient. Was waiting outside our hotel 10 mins early
Euro 36 each way though I paid the extra 4 for the tolls making it 40 total
Hotel wanted 70 one way and 120 return
