Not exactly travel related but there is a tsunami currently racking up the miles from the earthquake in Chile, at this stage its only a marine warning but I have posted this incase you have not seen the media warnings:

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology

MEDIA:
No use of the Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS)
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE AND FREQUENT BROADCAST
********************************************************************************
TSUNAMI WARNING NUMBER 2 FOR QUEENSLAND
Issued by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at
8:44 PM EST on Saturday 27 February 2010
********************************************************************************

TSUNAMI THREAT TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

********************************************************************************
SUMMARY:
Tsunami warning for the marine environment for QUEENSLAND.

Threatened areas extend from Point Danger to Double Island Point, Moreton
Bay.

Possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding
for several hours from 08:15 am (EST) Sunday.

Sea level observations HAVE confirmed a tsunami has been generated.

For further details visit the Bureau web site Bureau of Meteorology - Home Page.

Next update due by 10:14 PM EST on Saturday 27 February 2010
********************************************************************************
DETAILS:
Tsunami waves are more powerful than the same size beach waves, with the first
wave not always the largest. First tsunami effects are expected as follows:

Coolangatta after 08:15 am (EST) Sunday
Maroochydore after 09:00 am (EST) Sunday
Brisbane after 09:15 am (EST) Sunday

Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami. Check that your neighbours have
received this advice.

Boats in harbours, estuaries or shallow coastal water should return to shore.
Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront. Vessels already at sea
should stay offshore in deep water until further advised.

Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami, as there is the possibility of
dangerous, localised flooding of the immediate foreshore.

For emergency assistance, call EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT QUEENSLAND on 132 500

Maps showing the affected areas are on the Bureau web site
Home - JATWC. For a repeat of this warning call 1300 TSUNAMI (1300
878 6264).

TSUNAMI SOURCE:
An undersea earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred at 4:34 PM EST on Saturday 27
February 2010 near THE COAST OF CENTRAL CHILE (latitude 35.320S longitude
72.930W )

Hmm, perhaps living 1km from Moreton Bay at no more than a few metres elevation is not as ideal as once thought? I am relying on those big islands of sand between me and the wave to block the flow.

Your not the only one, I have Moreton Bay at the end of my street, hopefully the 200ft hills on Moreton and Stradbroke will come in handy.

The real freaky thing is the warning came across the bottom of the screen while watching the day after tommorrow, just after NY got hit by one.

Seeing high tide today just about entered our property I certainly hope it isnt a big one.

I'm not thrilled with the timing - hgh tide tomorrow at the Brisbane bar is at the same time the effects are anticipated to be hitting Bris. 2.63m high tide anticipated. 4 & 8 weeks ago were king tides & I think today & tomorrow are, too. We have just sandbagged downstairs & will move my car to higher ground before bed. (House flooded ~30cm in Nov 08, week that stoms hit Paddington & the Gap, & then 1.3m in May 09. New house HIGH on the agenda, pun intended)

So, anyone keen to have a surf in the morning?

but seriously, I can’t surf, and anticipate (hope) it’s just a small swell with no major issues. Then again, I am located quite far inland, so if it is bigger, I think I should be safe.

Hi there

Warning now updated to include all of NSW coast round to Lakes Entrance in VIC & the east coast of TAS around to Hobart.

Cheers

While I agree that "Tsunami" warnings are appropriate, I do suspect that the prevelence of them will lessen the effectivenesss of such a warning. Eg. Chicken Little syndrome.

I used to work at the centre that issues these warnings (ATWC at NMOC (National Meterological and Oceanographic Center)... This warning is well and truly required...

Note that it is a marine threat warning, not a land threat warning... so the danger is to people in the water and on the beach...

8.8 is a massive quake...

Note that waves reported at varios other locations around pacific.

I read that scl is closed for 72 hrs due to damage, flights diverting to Mendoza.

At least it looks like NZ did its job as the Australian Outer Island wave-break. I knew we built it there for a good reason .

Yes, very funny, NM.

My wife is currently staying in the Cook Is (in a beachfront house) and sent me an email this morning saying that they have all been evacuated to higher ground. Very wise IMHO.

I thought the waves were meant to hit this morning, yet when I woke up at midday my house wasn’t flooded downstairs. It is slightly wetter now though, with the heavy rain.

Would be interesting to receive a report from her regarding the situation.

In contrast to Perth, who hasn't had a drop for a very, very long time......

Oh no! 10cm wave hits Japan :)

10 cm tsunami hits small Japan southern island-TV
TOKYO, Feb 28 (Reuters) - A 10 cm (4 inch) tsunami hit a small island 1,950 km (1,212 miles) south of Tokyo on Sunday after a massive earthquake struck Chile the day before, Japan's NHK public TV reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of possible tsunami of 3 metres (10 ft) or more on Japan's main islands and has ordered thousands of coastal residents to evacuate to higher ground after Saturday's quake struck Chile. The quake killed more than 300 people as it toppled buildings and triggered a tsunami that ravaged a port town.
In May 1960, a tsunami struck the coasts of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and other northern Pacific coastal areas after an earthquake in Chile, killing around 140 people.

Very funny in context.

clifford,

I do hope your wife and everyone else are OK with this. As NM posted later, please report back further for us.

We travelled SYD-AKL on LA800 today. On arrival in AKL the onward leg was postponed indefinately and everyone who was travelling onward was accommodated. :D

This in comparison to someone we met on the shuttle who was on Air Tahiti Nui (to Tahiti) on a Qantas ticket and who was told tough luck and come back tomorrow as we are not flying that leg today due to a 'Natural Disaster' :(
