HVR; may we ask the value and type of item you claimed to make the system trigger you?

A $1,700 camera lens. The agent did say that because I'd declared it he would declare it depreciated enough to not repay the previously refunded duty. My trip overseas was 14 days long.

How many days ahead did you purchase it before claiming it?

Declare it for the correct amount. If you treat them like fools they rightfully don't like it.

Ensure you mention that you used it on your holiday. So, chances are they'll decide it's now used. Easy, and no avenue to land in the brown stuff.

Would it be safe get GST back on an engagement ring? One could easily say its a gift. As long as the engagement ring isn't on me upon returning to Austraila, does anyone thing there'll be any issues??
I've claimed less expensive multiple items before and brought them back with me without any issues, but an engagement ring might be different...

No issue with getting the GST Back. But see my previous post, expect to be checked up on when you arrive back (and the 2nd time as well in my case). If you don't intend to bring it back, I don't see any issue. In theory, if you brought it back without it being worn at a later date, you are still liable for GST when you declare it.

The ring won't be on me when I return back, it will be with my partner. I guess as long as we don't queue up together at the egate and customs, there shouldn't be a problem then.

I would hazard a guess it is hit and miss. I took an engagement/wedding ring and necklace overseas and claimed back GST. They were close to $3000. Nothing has been mentioned since.

We did TRS on wedding rings outbound, and no issues on return.

I don't think anyone here will comment on that specifically or if your partner needs to declare it. Just be aware that Customs/Border Protection have access to alot of information for data matching (ie. the flight manifest and travel info which means that they know that there are 2 pax on 1 PNR if you booked together).

I really wish they can make the $900 value on the incoming passenger card more specific. ie. relating to new items or items less than 30/60 days old. Every single passenger coming into Australia would have more than $900 worth of goods with them (watch, mobile phone, laptop, jewellery, handbag... etc). I personally think outgoing pax need to have the packaging with them to claim GST and inbound pax need to declare any new goods they bring in which is in its original packaging.

I think it is unfair to have to declare the goods if I buy a watch in HK for myself and need to pay duty for it if it is on my wrist when I enter the country. However, I believe I am supposed to declare it.

One thing that has never been clear to me. Is the value you declare meant to be current market/sellable value or the price you paid for the goods?
