OK, I have an flight to HND in Feb and am hoping to take advantage of TRS on the way out. I am aware that I will need to get oversized items checked prior to checking in bags (skis and snowboards for me)

Here is the rub, I am ex MEL transiting via SYD. From memory (not doing too many INT flights these days) QF will check the bags all the way through to HND so I will not get opportunity to show large bag at customs desk in SYD before checking bags.

Can I, perchance, get the TRS approval on the oversize items done in MEL, check bags through and clear TRS in SYD just before flight>? Or is that not how it works?

Unfortunately not. Customs will want to sight the bag at the point of your international departure. Otherwise there is a risk you might not export the goods at the transfer point.

How long is your connection in SYD? Don't check bags through.

Depending on time of day the TRS counters in SYD are understaffed with huge lines. I am not sure if it is possible to do online TRS claim in these circumstances.

Of course you can.

That sort of connection at that time of the night should give you enough time to go Customs landside to get the goods checked and then go to TRS counter airside.

Thanks John for the tip. So when we egt to Melbourne do I just check in for the DOM leg and then collect luggage at SYD before the transfer to T1 or how does it work?

That's pretty much it. you won't be able to use the free Qantas transfer with luggage, so either the train, bus, or taxi. Own expense.

When you get to MEL ask them to check bags only through to SYD and you will collect in SYD and check-in again.

I am not certain but think you cannot use the airside terminal transfer and need to make your own way to T1 after collecting luggage. The 400 bus or the train are your options and I would lean towards the bus as it comes around every 20 minutes. I think the cost is ~$5 per person.

I would lean towards the train as the cost is also around $5, they are more frequent than the bus, they won't be delayed by traffic, they are easier to use with luggage and if travelling as a family you only need to buy a ticket for the first child (subsequent children are free).

Hardly seems really worth it for a set of skis I might get $60 back on. the rest of the stuff is in hand luggage so will get opportunity regardless..

But thanks for the help anyway, its good to hear the options.

Your idea just won't work. The TRS is airside, so only hand luggage sized items can be taken into the TRS, and they insist on sighting the item being claimed.

It's possible to have large items sighted at the customs client service counter before the bags are checked in at the point where you are leaving Australia. In Sydney, from memory, the office is downstairs in the arrivals level in the international terminal. Keep in mind that it is intended for good that will not be returning to Australia, and, according to the rule, if the items come back, the overall passenger concession (currently at $900 per adult) also applies to the items.
