TRS - bring the goods back

I am about to get an iPad and MacBook Pro before my trip to AKL in 2 weeks. Given the OH is traveling with me the duty free concession will be $1800.

Unfortunately I'm fairly sure the iPad (3G 32 gig version) and MBP (13" 2.3 Ghz model) both add up to just a little more than $1800.

Should I simply chance it, claim TRS on both, and hope that they apply 'depreciation' when I declare my goods on the way back?

Or play safe and claim TRS on just the MacBook Pro? (ie the more expensive item)

Of course I could always buy the items separately, ie wait for another overseas trip before I buy the iPad...? My next overseas trip is in October... any chance of an iPad 3 by then? :p

Claim both on TRS and must declare on return as over $1800 duty free allowance for 2 adults; they then allow a 20% depreciation as the items are used. The key I was told previously by customs at Syd is that you must declare to get the 20% depreciation. If you don't declare the items that you have claimed TRS on, customs knows, and can pull you up on it.

Sweet! Thanks for that!

If i'm not mistaken, the $900 per person concession is pre-GST. So in order to calculate your limit of the iPad and MBP, you need to calculate the amount exclusive of GST and see if you exceed the $1800 for the both of you.

Yes unfortunately it's still about $100 over. I'll just wing it and hope they apply the 20% depreciation when I declare the items.

As long as you declare it, in my experience with Syd customs, they will apply the 20% depreciation. Make sure your items looked used....:p
