Just wondering which airlines is "good" in terms of the food and service and leg space ?

This is the first time we're going to the states and found this deal online.

American Airlines $1349 to LA return from Melb staying for 4 nights at Westin Bonaventure.

or United for approx the same price.

Or Qantas / VAustralia around $1500 without hotel.

Going from 22 Sept to early October.

Appreciate any inputs

Cheers.

American Airlines don't fly to the US from MEL. I am guessing it is a codeshare flying on Qantas.

Just check on the American airlines flight.It may be a codeshare on a Qantas plane if so save the money and buy from AA.
However AA often have specials to the USA flying via NRT(Tokyo).Personally I like going that way but longer and have to change planes.A stopover in Tokyo can be very enjoyable though.

I don't mind flying Qantas at that price :)

and from AA website.

total comes to $2,367.00 Melb - LA for the same period.

I will confirm with the offer provider, but if it's with Qantas it should be better than Delta / United, right ?

Cheers.

Yes IMHO.And if you have joined up QFF(free via Woollies EDR) then the AA codeshare usually still earns miles on QFF.

I've only ever flown Qantas (directly) between US & Australia, but my partner has flown Delta and was impressed (with food and service), but did start with low expectations.

Without going into too many nuances, Qantas, Delta & V Australia are all pretty much in the same category as far as long haul economy goes. If you're not too worried about where you earn FF points then all three are OK. United is behind in that they still only have a main screen for entertainment (ie movies shown on the main screen in the cabin at predetermined times). The other three have seat back on demand entertainment, with loads of choices, which in my books for a 14-15 hr flight is enough to avoid United.

The other option involves transitting Auckland, on Air NZ, but they are very good, and some of their planes will get you extra legroom over the other three.

also if you do go with qf/aa - see if you can book on the a380 rather than the 747

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Also QF/DL give essentially unlimited alcoholic drinks in Y (subject to safe serving of alcohol laws) but VA/UA in Y give 1 with meal only (pay for more).

For some this matters, for others not in the slightest. YMMV.

Sounds like school holidays in Australia so probably not going to be anything super special because flights are always full at that time. Can you put off the trip until late October or are you travelling with children of school age?

The link to the thread below has cheap fares ex SYD to HNL on Jetstar for travel 26 Oct-02 Dec 2010 for AUD349.00 each way - with taxes return fare SYD/HNL/SYD is AUD1048.98.

http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...airfares/jet-friday-fare-frenzy-15404-19.html

If you then go to the Priceline (US) - not the chemist website and buy a separate ticket HNL to SFO or LAX it's about USD351.61 return including taxes.

Find Cheap Flight Tickets & Search Cheap Flights | Priceline.com

This may work out cheaper with two tickets than one but whenever you are buying separate tickets it's always a good idea to stay at least one night in each direction at the intermediate stop eg HNL.

If there's a delay to your outbound flight you run the risk of missing your next one & because it's in a separate booking the outbound carrier won't accept responsibility for getting you on another flight.

As it's your first trip you might feel more comfortable booking with the one airline via their own website from MEL to the West Coast. Have you considered flying MEL to San Francisco (SFO) on either QF or UA?

You could always fly into SFO then hire a car & drive down the coast to LAX & either fly out of LAX or Virgin America usually have cheap USD49.00 one way fares LAX/SFO vv & fly back up to SFO. tion - Thursday, October 28, 2010

@ozbeachbabe

unfortunately I can't take leave on august (cheap fare from qantas at that time) or late oct,
and have to go on sept 22 to avoid unpaid leave (work holiday from 22 sept to 4 oct)

i don't mind going to sfo first though. will research more!

i was going to book qantas from 22 sep to 5 oct for $1360 incl taxes to LA, but the price suddenly went up over the weekend -.- to approx $1600.

@moa999 : will do!

@docjames : thx u for that info :)

@dajop : wow. thanks a lot for the useful infos!

I flew with Qantas Economy from Sydney to LA in Jan, which was a 12-13hrs flight I think and it was nice, no complaints. Got good service, good entertainment selection, food was ok and the seats are quite comfy. Rest of my internal flights in the US were with AA, codeshare with Qantas.

My friend recently flew with V and she said it was good too..but I can't comment on that.

I like VAustralia mood lighting, comfortable seats roomy and great staff.

I've flown MEL-LAX (of SFO) with:
Qantas --average
Air NZ (via Auckland) -- awesome but expensive
United -- yuck and often without entertainment in back of seat
VAustralia -- winner

VAustrala is so much better value for money and comfort.
