Have you paid this rate personally or on the company account? It would also depend on how long you stayed. I can understand paying US$350 for 1 night but would you pay this for a 2 week stay. I don't know New York that well but I am sure one can find reasonable accommodation for a lot less than US$350/night especially if the holiday was self funded.

That was a company account - and the $500 was for 6 nights - it was the cheapest price for a decent chain hotel that we could find. The guys from the UK though $500+ was quite reasonable.

It is hard what I would pay for a purely self funded trip - but I do choose to pay a premium when I stay and choose to stay less frequently (this will be my first real holiday since 2001 when we go away in July).

Also for my upcoming stays I am paying a premium through using more points than I need to - I am booking the Waldorf in NY and London and will be dining at Ramsay's restaurant - but again this my choice, to partake less frequently but to do so at a premium.

When on a ATW holiday a few years back, New York was our second most expensive accommodation. Venice won the prize for most expensive.

We stayed at the New Yorker hotel which is a few blocks from Penn Station. Our requirement was finding accommodation with easy transfer from the station as we planned to arrive and depart New York via train. The rooms were really small with little space for any luggage, let alone 4 people in a room. But we knew that was going to be the case and didn't spend much time in the room anyway.

I would not pay $500/night on personal/leisure travel. But for NY I would expect to be paying at least $250. For business travel, I would not be happy paying $500 but would pay that if it was all that was available for a business-class hotel. I do not class the New Yorker as a business-class hotel. It is Y all the way.

NM do you check sites such as priceline or travelzoo? For eg. IIRC Sheraton NYC is offering rooms now for US$150/ night until March or thereabouts. Another example; if you want a true bargain, the Ritz Carlton in Osaka is offering rooms at about Aus$150/ night now via the travelzoo JP site.

But all this talk is late-minute related, and I understand any desire to secure rooms early (= no stress).

As I am not planning a personal/leisure trip to NY anytime soon, I have not been checking such sites.

But when planning a trip I do check out such options. But I rarely use them. They do help with options.
