Tricks to economy long haul

The old Economy Flat bed is rarer now that so many (?) airlines have armrests that only go up 45 degrees....

The QF 789 armrests in whY can be pushed right back so they're flush with the seatback. The 388's aren't so good.

On my most recent trip to USA, I bought along one of these.
Best thing ever. I even slept. It was awkward to carry around, but worth it. No more bulky than those dimwits who fill the entire overhead locker with their junk.

I cant last 5 mins in an airplane seat, without pain from sacrum/tailbone.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere... but compression socks! They make a huge difference to comfort when sitting upright for long periods of time, Absolutely zero leg ache or pain, and no sluggish circulation or swollen feet.

After flying from Melbourne to Stockholm seven weeks ago without one of those good cushions, I was in agony most mornings for the next two weeks before the pain killers kicked in each day - mainly due to having had a back operation last year (I have one of those cushions at home). Same thing then happened when I had to drive a car for more than an hour over here.

My solution in the car, I am hoping will work when we fly back. I bought a neck rest and found that if I sat on it with the two ends pointing back, it pretty much replicated the effect of that good cushion that I foolishly didn't bring with me.
Regards,
Renato

What are these called ? Looks very helpful

Further to @MEL_Traveller 's comment about adjacent spare seat:

Consider the purchase of a spare seat. Often called a comfort seat or extra seat.
This is particularly attractive in certain circumstances:
2 passengers and row of 3 seats
1 passenger and row of 2 seats.
If travelling solo in a row of 3 be prepared to share your spare seat with the other passenger and explain that you have paid for it.

The attraction of a spare seat is the space for the price of:
the fare LESS taxes and surcharges
the luggage allowance
the FF points and status credits (including double SC)

Need to book manually by ringing the airline or via travel agent.
Watch that they put you adjacent to your spare seat!!

Husband and I like the 3 seat one.
Have used the purchase an extra when travelling solo. Didn't work as well as I had hoped as the arm rest didn't go up..the bloke who was in the third seat was very pleased as the plane was absolutely full
Having double status credits was very nice

Great information post Quickstatus thanks

Although beware that not all airlines allow additional baggage for the extra seat... so worth checking if that’s what you’re after.

No cost. There just wasn't anyone sitting in the two seats next to me!
If I travel in Y I take a small blow up cushion to sit on. I can adjust the amount of air to make it really comfortable, and it takes up almost no space in my luggage.
