Tricks by AA with crediting points for flights

I got tricked by the AA website, so I will make a post just in case others interpret the website like me.

Be careful with the amount of points it states you earn with flying with partner airlines.

Looking at the page for Qantas:

I assumed that for an airfare in booking class "M", I would earn 0.5 miles per mile flown and 1 point for each mile flown.

In fact it is actually 0.5 miles per mile flown, and 0.5 points per mile flown.

The points is based on the miles earned, NOT the miles flown.

IIRC it is mentioned in the AA challenge thread, and does come up from time to time as a "catch". Hope it didn't affect your requalification efforts.

Yep, it's a bit misleading. You really need to consider the table and column headings and understand what they mean:

The column "Miles Accrual Percentage" could realistically be read as "Base Mileage Earning Percentage" when considering the column "Elite Qualifying Points Per Base Mile Earned".

In the case of M class, AAdvantage base miles earned are 50% of the miles travelled and EQP's are 100% of the base miles earned which again is 50% of the miles travelled.

A lot worse is say, S class, where AAdvantage base miles earned is 50% of the miles travelled and EQP's are a 50% of the base miles earned which is in fact 25% of the miles travelled.

Taking a premium class, D, AAdvantage base mile earning is 100% of the miles travelled. An additional 25% AAdvantage miles are earned as a bonus, but these are not base miles. EQP's are 150% of the base miles earned which is 150% of the miles travelled.

A straight forward way to calculate EQP earning is to multiply the "Miles Accrual Percentage" and "Elite Qualifying Points Per Base Mile Earned" figures (ignoring any bonus miles) by the number of miles travelled.
