Hello, first post for me, have been lurking for about six months, good info from the regulars, thanks.
I am travelling to Bali from Perth in a couple of weeks.
First time travelling with Garuda, what can I expect?

Also, I have access to the Dewa lounge on departure at DPS, any ideas what it is like.

Welcome to AFF Batesy.

I cannot help with your query, hopefully someone else can. There is not a whole lot of discussion here involving Garuda, though a search of this site using Garuda as a keyword will give you a few references.

You may find more info on FlyerTalk at the link below. There is some discussion on Garuda, and a couple of further links to some other sites which may assist you.

Flew Sydney to Denpasar on Garuda a couple of times in the last 12 months, the business class are uncomfortable as they seem to have a lump of 4x2 across the back of them  . The entertainment is also fairly limited.

The staff (particularly the ladies) are courteous and eager to pls. The choice of meal is limited to two and they often run out of one or the other.

They are heavy handed with the drinks (ask for a weak whisky and coke and they translate that as 50/50) but happy to keep them coming :D .

The DEWA lounge is OK, not up to QC by any means but better than sitting in the terminal. Watch out for pickpockets along the way.

You need to buy a visa on arrival (US$10) but they accept $A. Watch out for the porters at the baggage acrousel as they try to basically grab your bag and help you outside with it and are looking for a tip of course. Can be a bit of fun to feign picking up a bag you know is not yours just to watch them dive for it  .

There is a scrum when you walk outside of touts offering taxis etc. The official taxi window is to the right of the exit and is clearly marked. The system works well and you pay in advance at the window and then walk with your driver to his cab over in the carpark. Airport into Kuta is about 25,000rp but really seems to depend on the vagaries of the gods on the day and can be 10,000rp either way. When you realise the difference is a bit over A$1 it really doesn't matter 8) .

Can't tell you anything about economy class as I have never been beyond the curtain into the land of the great unwashed but I expect the choices are even more limited.

The Balinese are beautiful and friendly, some of their Javanese countrymen are not so. A walk down the street in Kuta can be tiresome with the touts but there are also bargains to be had at street side stalls and shops. DVDs are about $0.93 for latest releases but the quality is usually bad but once the films are released on DVD officially the quality is the same as you would buy in K-Mart.

Have a great time.

Thanks for the replies folks.
I have been to Bali before but only flown with QF & AO out of the east coast. Garuda is the only airline with daily flights to and from Perth, otherwise I would use AO, at least I could use the Qantas club in Perth on the way out.
Will give an update on our experience with Garuda after the trip.

AFAIK VOA is US$25, but free if you have a relevant APEC business card with Indonesian exemption. Sorry, haven't travelled with Garuda or used their lounges. Note that wine & some spirits are expensive in Bali (more than Oz) so max out your allowance on these. If you're over, then customs will usually confiscate the excess.

Also given recent events, it may be prudent to lock your bags. Enjoy Bali :D .

Thanks BlacKnox.
Only a quick 4 night trip to Bali for Easter so its carry on luggage only for us, my partner was adamant about that. Planning on buying the $20 Bombay Sapphire at duty free on the way there.

IME, 2 Litres of a decent Red might be better value.

Spirits are relatively cheap when compared to Wine, especially red.

I once paid ~AUD55 for a bottle of Mateus Rose in Jimbaran Bay! (Honeymoon, so necessary  )

Ouch - now that's gotta hurt  .

Agree that red wine is comparatively more expensive than spirits. Also bali has "local" spirit equivalents of e.g. whisky that are low priced.

If you need to buy supplies/ other alcohol, then I can recommend Bintang supermarket located on the main drag between Seminyak and Legian. This is also a good place to buy cheap omiyage (souvenirs - not the guy from Karate Kid :p ) for friends/ family such as noodles, bali spices, curry mixes, local chocolates etc etc.

There is a US$10 Visa on Arrival in Bali, I believe (but am not 100% sure) that this is for stays of 5 days or less.

OT: Just a word of warning, security in JNB rips locks off and delves into the contents of your bag... Not Happy Jan!

D P G back home in Sydney!

Aussies may be granted a 7 day VOA for a fee of US$10 or a 30 day VOA for a fee of US$25. Both visas are non-extendable and non-transferable. Now I know the OP is only staying 4 nights, then yes US$10 is payable for VOA.
