Have a Melbourne long weekend coming up and looking for suggestions on a restaurant. Three nights all up and have already booked ll Bacaro and Flower Drum... looking for ideas for the last night. Happy with any cuisine and budget.

I assume you are city based so a few places you could have a look at include:
- Phillipe or Bistro Vue for French
- Sake Restaurant in Flinders Lane for japanese
- The European in Spring St
- Supernormal for shared Asian in Flinders Lane
- Fonda - casual mexican
You can even drop into Din Tai Fung at Emporium!

How long is a piece of string?

Donovan's is still one of my favourite restaurants in "Melbourne" (St Kilda).
If you want the cult of Andrew McConnell, then Cutler & Co. has just had a refresh.
Gingerboy is consistently one of my go-to's in the CBD.
Equally I could say hire a car, and drive to Coburg or something for an authentic ethnic experience.

There are plenty of other good places in the CBD (if you are staying there). After two big dinners, you may want something cheap and cheerful?

I love Donovan's too. Especially the seafood pasta.

Have been to HH a few times (early to avoid the queue!). Morris Jones is on the list to try. The main dinner haunt is France Soir - the gentleman's favourite - for those that venture South Yarra way.

Even though we've got breakfast included - we'll be walking across Gordon Reserve to have breakfast here.

France Soir is generally quite good, although a bit of a squeeze getting into some of the tables.

Sake is one of my go to fav restaurants. Spice Temple is also excellent.

Haven't made it there yet but friends rate Tonka highly.

Thanks to all that contributed. Despite my best efforts to select one of the suggested restaurants .... SWMBO has gone with Bistro Gitan.

Thanks all!

The overall winner - ll Bacaro. The complete package of excellence.

Very close second - Bar Lourinha. First time visit for us, awesome menu, very enjoyable long lunch ;)

Best breakfast - split result between European (me) and Cellar Bar (wife/kids).

The one to avoid in the future - Jardin Tan. Great location and fit-out .... the food/service just didn't come close to matching.

How was Bistro Gitan?
Classy feel and look. It was bursting at the seams, but they just couldn't cope! By 8.30pm they'd run out of oysters and by the end of the night they'd run out of some of the desserts. The food was of a high standard however, waiting 1 hour between courses is a major fail and killed the vibe. Some of the dish portions were ridiculously oversized.

Not sure why they couldn't cope with the numbers ... they regulate the booking process well so they would have known what was coming. At the end of the night the four of us just wanted it over.... not the best feeling one should leave with!

That's a good list. How is your wallet feeling? :p
Yes, it does clean you out. However, it can only get worse... my kids are fast approaching (legal) drinking age  The wallet will really feel it then!
