We are on a 14 hour flight to Dubai and then 6 hours on to London with our severely disabled grandaughter. In the past we have managed to all fly Business class which made for a much easier flight. However this time funds & points would not stretch that far and we are in Economy.:(
Any suggestions on making the flight more comfortable for her would be welcome. Although disabled in body her brain is 100%. and she understands everything.:)

Hi,

I've not flown long haul with my son, however for our flights with him we ensure we know our toileting, eating and drinking plans. The FA's have always been great with him, however some of the other passengers..

Does she use a tablet or laptop for entertainment?

Thanks Shelf for your reply. She uses a laptop for entertainment Our main concerns are her involuntary movements annoying the passengers in front. Previous flights have all gone well but of course because she has been in Business Class she has been able to lie down. Just not sure how things will go in Economy [with the lack of room] especially when we have to get her up for a stretch.

If there are 4 or more in your group, consider booking seats in a 2 and 2 formation (front/rear). That will mean she'll only knock the seat of your travelling party, who I'm sure won't mind.

Given you have travelled before you will have some idea of how to access the toilets etc and how you manage that aspect. How old is she / how big is she as that will be a factor in how comfortable you all are in Y.

I think seat selection would be worth paying for (if not covered by status etc) to try and optimise your seating.

A 4 in a row at the middle bulkhead (non-exit row) or as suggested 2-2 in a row - if you can get upstairs on the 380 the layout is 2-4-2.

I'd also suggest a call to QF (assuming it's QF, or failing that, whomever the airline is), if the online tool won't assist with decent seat selection and see if they can "override" the selections. Otherwise if it's 3-1 seating you end up with, then the three of you can rotate turns in the "1" seat to maximise your rest time.

Failing all of this, a casual conversation with the seat "mates" around you early in the flight just letting them know the jiggling is involuntary, and the vast majority of people are understanding. If not, speak to the FA onboard and see if you or more likely the other pax can be repositioned elsewhere in the cabin to make everyone's trip easier (if there are available empty seats).

Good on you for worrying about others but i'd personally say you've got enough on your plate and try to do what works for you. If other pax don't like it, and you've taken reasonable steps to make the trip easier for everyone else, there's not much you can do.

Funny thing Flying Senior I was just thinking about you and flying overseas. Do let me know if I can help you.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. We are in a 3-1 seating with our grandaughter seated in the middle -so the arms don't knock anyone coming down the aisle. Once seated it would be too difficult to move her again from seat to seat but we will have to get her up for a stretch. Will implement your other suggestions though. Thanks again.:)
