Re: Heads up about program changes

Wow! Giving up row 5?

Not me - I would have suggested 5J swap with the PAX adjacent in row 3.

I was originally in 5K. The guy was in 3G, lady in 5H. There was a couple in 3DF. J was full.

Well then no swap ... Unless the CSM can arrange things for them without affecting you ... tough I know, but there are reasons row 5 is coveted by many.

Anyhoo ... To make this on topic, do you know why they were separated?

I certainly have a new appreciation of row 5 having flown over in 5K with a shadow. 3G wasn't bad but yes, I picked 5K based on recommendations here.

There was a bit of swapping going on in J on that flight. Some other guy who (I'm pretty sure) was in row 5 wanted a window so he swapped with the guy in 3K. The CSM was telling the guy who was in 3K that row 5 is the best row in the aircraft - and I agree.

The woman I was supposed to sit next to simply said something like "They separated us" which to me means she relied on pot luck & didn't make any effort to ensure they were together.

Or an op-up.

I find 5k a little awkward on overnight flights sitting next to someone.

"They separated us" could mean that they were never even together at the beginning because they didn't bother to pre-allocate their seats at the time of booking, the end result being they expect people who did go to the effort to be the ones to swap.

Not sure if VA do last minute points upgrades but couples need to know if their upgrade comes through to take what seats they are given.

If it was a late-ish upgrade, there isn't much they can do given the cabin is full. And if it wasn't, to be honest, if I had 2 tix in J, it probably wouldn't cross my mind that the airline would separate us. In Y, I would definitely take a good look, but J, it's not something that I would look out for.

I did a J booking for the folks SYD/LAX/SYD dep in Sept & even 5 months in advance there were only a couple of pairs of seats available for selection by the window & they didn't want to in the middle block of three.

So even in premium cabins I would strongly advise to allocate your seats at the time of booking.

I find 5k a little awkward on overnight flights sitting next to someone.

Hence the reason I moved. The open cabin isn't so bad but with the curtain closed for 5H/K, that would have been awkward because of the situation.

I'm totally taking 5H/K if traveling with a partner...

haven't glanced at this topic for awhile...read the last 4 pages... just reinforced why I choose to remain 'unattached' :D

Re: Heads up about program changes

My wife says one thing but in reality it is a thinly veiled attempt of saying don't you dare.

Saying that she insists that a skybed (or equivalent) is the only way to travel.

Different strokes for different folks.
In my household, I've always offered (and its been accepted) the business class boarding pass and I've sat in the back.

Not from a SWMBO perspective but from a being good bloke point of view.
We tend to spend all of our points on my wife and our young adults (kids) flying in the pointy end.

As JohnK would now, I've lost a few kgs so fit nicely into Y these days.

All of the pointy end of town for the wife allows me freedom in other areas, i.e. golf whenever I want, travel whenever I want, do whatever I want...thank god I don't work much!

Cheers
BF

Ahh.....you must be a diplomat.....!!!

At times I would prefer to not sit next to my SO (a LAME) as when onboard an aircraft particularly overseas, he's always on the look out for what could be potential open defects or other mechanical issues & voices his concerns which makes me nervous.

On a recent DFW/YYC flight he was watching a movie on his netbook & announced that he was watching an episode of Air Crash Investigation. I was a bit gobsmacked as to why anyone would want to watch an episode of ACI while they're actually on a flight so thinking I was seeking clarification on what episode it was rather than a look that said "are you nuts why on earth are you telling me this" he further volunteered "it's about an Amercian Airlines MD-80 crash".

I enjoy watching ACI as much as the next person, however never when I'm flying. Call me superstitious but I don't want to test the theory "you bring about what you think about" particularly as right at that moment we were on an AA MD-83 at 30,000 feet.

When I said "what, the one in Little Rock" he said "no the one where it crashes in to the sea off LA".

With my SWMBO hat firmly on & a roll of the eyes I exhaled loudly & said "that was Alaska Airlines"!
