I know there is another thread about Comms and Internet access in other countries via Aussie Telco plans.

Most of the discussion I've seen discuss the routes most regularly travelled and also additional discussed the 50-70 popular destination countries covered by various inexpensive temporary 30 day sims from Europe (e.g. UK 3 Sim)

But I wanted to suss out the options and AFF experiences/recommendations for the OTHER Countries that are not on the majority of cheaper plans (I have seen so far).

Case in point is next years trip to Morocco, Egypt and Jordan.

I am currently on ALDI pre-purchase 12 month plan (Telstra4G) which works out at $20pm. I barely use half my data allocation in the plan; so being a bit of a tighta.s who has largely survived on free hotel Wi-Fi for years, not really interested in switching carriers to a $45pm or more plan per month just for 4-5 weeks overseas.

I mainly want data for Internet access. I make most of my calls & texts on WhatsApp.

If I need to make an emergency call or text to a mobile or landline then I am prepared to wear the risk of having to pay for that unlikely scenario on roaming if necessary (i.e. not included in the sim plan).

Any bright ideas/experiences/suggestions?

Personally I think your approach works just fine except if you want data (when not on WiFi) - the only use we've had for this is to use Google Maps while driving (ie a hire car) - so we only look for a local SIM option in countries where we want to hire a car. A few emergency phone calls really don't justify a local SIM or international roaming uplift - text messages are pretty cheap. Otherwise WiFi is so ubiquitous in all countries (presumably there are exceptions in some destinations but these are not on my bucket list).
