Hi,

Does anyone recommend TravelSIM as a multi country option in Europe?
It looks too cheap to be true!!

I used a Travel Sim on my last two trips to Europe. Didn't have any problems and it was way cheaper than global roaming on my usual sim. :)

Thanks,
I have emailed them as well because the web site claims it is free to receive a call but then also says 0.21c per minute?
What was the situation with your received calls?

It's a while since I've used it, but from memory there are 2 ways for people to call you...one is directly on the sim card phone number, the other is via a 1800 number. I think one of them is free to receive and one costs, but it's still cheaper than roaming rates.

Have you looked at the charges? Have you looked at the initial outlay?

There are much better deals around without chucking it Travelsim's way.

They route all calls via one of the Baltic states. As a result it's expensive to receive and to call. Unbelievably so. They don't tell you that.

Depending on where you are in Europe you can buy a cheap SIM card with rates much lower than Travelsim. Let me know where you are going and I could let you know of cards in some countries that are a good deal.

The guarantee they offered that it was the cheapest available at the time was not honoured.

And they ignore all correspondence about their bad and expensive service.

I'm heading to Italy for three months. What do you recommend for phone and iPad?

IMHO if you are going for 3 months to Italy look at the local carriers and see what deals are available.

I would only be looking to prepaid.

Make sure the phone you are taking is unlocked so you can use another network's sim card in it.

As most of you know I work for the opposition to TravelSIM so I won't say good/bad things about them (nor spruik my own employer).

I would suggest the OP looks at Communication & Internet in this forum though for more information on roaming products

(and if you want info on the product I can offer drop me a PM and i'll sort you out:))

I travel quite a bit, and previously used one the "Travel Sim" type cards - can't remember the brand. They're ok - but I always seemed to get delayed calls, echo, or drop out for no particular reason. I think I used it for 2 weeks and then decided to dump it.

In all honesty, if you're staying in one country for that amount of time, I'd be buying a local SIM.

I travel in Asia an awful lot and have quite a collection - top up is easy, the calls within the country are cheaper (I call and SMS clients) and if you want to talk with family or friends - give them the number and ask them to call. Note also that some countries have a special number to use as the prefix, instead of 00 - Thailand's AIS is 00961xx_xx_xx_ and DTAC is 00461xx_xx_xx_, which reduces the call cost yet again.

Multi country SIMs are ok, but after the hassles I've had with them, I don't bother any more. Buying local is just as good (and often cheaper), and in most cases they last 12 months as long as you top up.

Hi,
As I will be in 6 European countries in 21 days my main issue is having 6 phone numbers!!

Hi,

I spent about 6 weeks in the EU a few years back, and picked up a Vodafone SIM Dublin) to use in Ireland, the UK, Egypt and Brussels. It obviously incurred roaming charges, but from memory the EU now has standardised rates, so you know what you're paying throughout the EU, regardless of the country. I didn't call out much - I sent SMS mostly and had family and friends call me - as that was cheaper than me calling out.

Perhaps you can compare the EU telcos (Orange, Vodafone, Three etc) and their charges and see how they compare with AU roaming rates? Otherwise go the "Travel Sim" route (I agree 6 numbers in 21 days is kinda crazy!!) - but it still may be pricey?

I have a Travel Sim, & use it occasionally, but have found that Skype is a lot cheaper for making calls, although Travel Sim is good for receiving SMS's sent from their website.

I usually arrange for people to SMS me on Travel Sim, & then I return the calls with Skype.

I have leased a TEP card which is a portable wifi base for around 80 pounds for 4 weeks. Basically four weeks of internet access throughout UK and Europe. But my iphone is locked into Optus network and I dont want to buy a phone to get another sim card. But I believe I can use the TEP card, connect the iphone to that wifi, then use Viber app to call for free to Australia under the TEP plan. At least, thats the plan...

Re: Travel sim.. tru is true

Had great success with tru on a recent 5 week multi country euro jaunt.
Always worked , logged in to a new country quickly and gave you a message with the rates.
Direct dialling.. none of this call back roulette.
Was so useful we haven't even bothered to analyse how much we spent.. but I'm quite sure it was peanuts compared to an 'Oz carrier on roaming.
