Won't that cause VISA problems still?

Considering that I will still be entering via USA, then staying in CAN and then returning through USA?
Entry to/from Canada from the USA is quite painless.

Last time we went USA to Canada they asked why and we said we were going to lunch and they said to make sure we enjoyed ourselves.

I can't see why it would. You aren't in the USA to work, just in transit/holiday. What you do in Canada is none of the USA's business.

Nope it won't cause problems (other than you need to go through CBP each time), it just won't reset the time on the VWP. For the purposes of VWP or other visa's which require you to leave the USA for the time on them to be reset, Mexico and Canada do not count as other countries.

So if you enter the US on VWP stay for two months, go to Canada for two months you can't then reenter the US again. You can however enter the US on VWP, stay for one month, go to Canada for one month and then enter the US again on VWP and stay for one more month.

However there is nothing wrong with entering the US on VWP for two months, coming back to Australia for two months and re-entering the US again.
