Recently I have to cancel some international travel due to medical advise. These tickets were purchased using Woolworth's Ezybanking master carrd.

When I rang up today (to CBA), I was informed that Ezybanking insurance covers only lost of life or body parts. Is this correct?

No idea, but I wouldn't be suprised. But you should check your policy. If you don't have one, call them and ask for a copy, or a link to a pdf copy.

Insurance from credit card companies vary greatly. I have credit card travel insurance with 3 - Citibank gold, ANZ Visa gold, and Amex Rewards maximiser. They all vary, but from memory (and it is hard to keep up, as the terms change frequently) the ANZ visa gold is the best, and I only have to spend $500 (or is it $250 - I'm not sure but I always spend a minimum of $500 just to be safe) towards any of the holiday expenses to qualify for the full travel insurance. I have had it for about 10 years, but have never had to make a claim.

I managed to track down the following information regarding the insurance. The information was current as of January this year, (document appears to have been created in August 2005) but may have been changed since then.

In summary, I think you're out of luck. The insurance only seems to cover accidents that occur after departure - not before.

Your best course of action is to request the full and correct conditions from CommBank and read it yourself.

Whilst I sympathise with your predicament even if credit card insurance does not cover the full cost of ticket you should be able to recover the majority of the cost when cancelling the tickets prior to travel. Even a red-edeal with QF can be put into credit for use in next 12 months and you lose something like $100-$200 when redeeming the credit.

I had paid $2700 in May for flights for my mother to travel SYD-ATH-SKG-ATH-SYD with Thai in August. In July we found out that my father would require a heart operation and my mother would need to stay in Australia to look after him. We cancelled the tickets and the cancellation fees were $300 but we could write a letter stating the reason for cancellation and Thai Airways could reduce the cancellation fee to a simple $50 administrative charge on compassionate grounds. We are waiting a decision from Thai Airways.
