I will be going to Indonesia shortly and didnt want to rely on my ANZ travel insurance ( platinum card) cos I cant say I v happy with it.

Can anyone recommend other travel insurance to me? I did buy my ticket on my ANZ card - would that conflict?

Thanks

Raz

If you are covered by the Plat card travel insurance why would you need more? Is it that bad? I'd look at getting another credit card if that's the case as one of the few benefits I see of these expensive cards is the travel insurance.

Agreed. When I had my CBA Plat card the 1:1 FF to award point ratio and the comp travel insurance were the only 2 reasons I had it. Otherwise I'd have had a cheaper annual fee card for sure. The only thing it didn't cover to a reasonable level by default was injury through terrorist act - but good luck finding that in any standard TI policy these days. It's only available as an added cost option AFAIK. Things like Hire Car damage excess, etc were all covered as standard on CBA's Plat card policy. What more do you require?

Cheers

I just booked using Medibank (Underwritten by Allianz and managed by Mondial Assistance) and the rip off coughs charged me $165 for seven days! (Two people)

Just looked at the certificate of currency and it says "Worldwide"

We're going to North America... I might look at that TID mob, I forgot about them but have seen some billboards recently around the place...

I rang several Travel insurance agents and they all advised me that should I need to make a claim then I have to go to ANZ travel insurnce first regardless of the fac that I have purchased their travel insurance.

This is becos the claim form says do you have any other travel insurance and since I have bought my ticket on my cc I will have to go to them first.and only if they refused me could I claim with them

I must add that all of them were willing to sell me their insurance and did not dislcose the above facts to me at first. Only after I kept questioning
did they say that they would not allow my claim.

My mum booked her ticket and paid with a gold card and then the TA (FC) gave her the hard sell on insurance. She was only going to Canada (not USA at all) and it was going to be $1500 or so for two months! I told her to tell 'em to stick it!

I can highly recommend Travel Insurance Direct from personal experience. It may not be the cheapest travel insurance policy available but the claim processing is very efficient.

I haven't noticed a great deal of price difference in the TDI and Medibank prices. But then I normally look at the annual policy and Mrs WF is an extended period North America policy.

Have purchased both (different years) No claims. QBE definitely gave me a hard time in even earlier years but then the rules on RTWs have since changed.

I would read the PDS carefully to reveal what you are covered for & what are the claims' process, rather than rely on a sales person advice over the telephone.

For an insurance company to say "go make a claim elsewhere first before coming to us" really defeats the purpose of what insurance is, and the common law of subrogation for which insurance is based on. That is, the insurance company accepts to pay you for any loss/damage that you are covered for, and they 'takeover' all rights that you may have to recover those losses from a 3rd party even if it means pursuing ANZ travel insurance!

To translate - If you need make a claim for a specific event for which you may have more than one covering policy:
  • Claim through only the one policy; normally the one that provides the best cover for the specific event.
  • Do not claim though any other policy.
  • In all your dealings with the entity you choose to make the claim though, do not, repeat, do not, reveal you may have also been covered by a separate policy with a different company.

Hypothetically, what happens if ANZ Insurance says "You need to make a claim on any other insurances first" ... then you really have a nice runaround and cant even make a claim ever

And I know there are no identical insurance policy, but if the purchased cover says make a claim before coming to us, then they could always decline your claim purely because the first one rejected it (but of course they would say that in a nice way and not say it as direct as me)

The ANZ policy basically says pick one or the other

If
You can claim from anyone else and We also pay You, then You must
refund
Us the amount We paid if they pay You. You cannot claim from Us
and them unless We are only making up the difference.

Thanks for the link Serfty to the Travel Insurance Direct and to the other poster for your recommendation.

I am in the process of arranging travel inurance to Europe and for the past 15 years gone through our Health fund (underwritten by CGU) which always was cheaper than the Travel agents.

Travel Insurance Direct is cheaper by $146. That is a considerable amount.

Do they charge an excess fee? I noticed the Columbus Direct does.

Yes Travel Insurance Direct charges an excess of $100 on most claims although you do have the option to reduce the excess to $0 for an additional $25 per year.

Thank you JohnK

I will sit down and look closely at the different companies.
