I'm going away in November for 23 days and have insurance courtesy of booking on my Amex, however my flatmate who is travelling with me is not covered by it, even though I paid for both flights with the card. (Correct me if I'm wrong).
Any suggestions on a good reasonably priced insurance for this one off trip? He is 25 years old and we are travelling to the UK and Egypt.
I was thinking QBE on the QF website to get the points - any better deals?

The help of members here is always appreciated.

If you are looking at QBE to get QFF points, be very careful. Make sure the PDS covers what you need.

Hi,
Travel Insurance needs to be looked at carefully, my experience recently was not good.

I had a relatively new up market camera stolen in Seville Spain and when I discovered it I was at Gibralta so I phoned the insurance company and they advised me to just replace it and make a claim when I returned to Oz.

I went to great lengths to get a police report as was a requirement but this was impossible ( those that have been in the situation will attest to this) I emailed the company and they agreed that this would be OK and to fill in a stat dec. on my return.

I purchased the new camera for around $2,000 and made the claim which was disallowed due to the no police report. Again protested and sent in a full story of events.

The result was a discounted payment for depreciation of about $250.

I would like to know if there is a policy that gives a new for old or an agreed value pay out in the event. Is there any company doing this? I travel a lot and it was so disapointing to have my claim discounted like this.

Just reviewed the file and see that the original camera was purchased 21/7/04 and replaced 11/11/07. Eventual payout $109.50. Thank you Worldcare, underwritten by Alliance and managed by ETI Australia P/L trading as Mondial Assistance. Original value $730

Hi stoney, welcome to AFF. :D

Interesting story.

It would be interesting to know who was the underwriter of your policy?

Other than that, I'm curious about the following:
"The result was a discounted payment for depreciation of about $250."

Did you received $250 or the purchase value of the camera, less $250?

Here's a proposal out of left field for the OP.

Sign up your travelling companion for a supplementary card on your Amex account. Supplementary card holders are covered by the insurance.

Even if you don't trust your flat-mate not to max out your Amex, you needn't give them the card, just sign them up then put the card somewhere safe --- or cut it up.

Hmmm, I thought of that, but it wouldn't work retrospectively would it? I've already purchased both flights on my card.
