We in the UK for a few months and are taking a short trip to Italy and back to the UK in a couple of weeks. As we fall a week short of the minimum residency requirements, we are finding it impossible to get travel insurance to cover the trip. Have tried numerous companies and the minimum residency requirement is 3 months. Even called our Australian insurers to see if we could organise it from there, but were met with a definite NO. We both hold Uk and Australian passports. Never dreamt this would be a problem and would love to know if there are any possibilities to get cover.

What type of visa are you in the UK on ( or as a UK citizen ). If you are eligable for NHS cover then you should be ok through the EHIC ( formerly the E111 ) cover to other EU countries for medical cover. Have a look at https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

If you are just in UK as a tourist, do u have insurance for UK trip that you can extend to cover Italy?

Thanks, I'll follow that up. My wife has a NI number and is entitled to National Health, but I don't so could be a problem. And as we were going to be away for months, we did not take insurance from Australia for the six months (very, very expensive). Looks like we shall just have to be fit and careful. Thanks for the input anyway.

An interesting situation. I didn't realise this problem existed.

The few companies I've checked do have this type of clause.

Will keep thinking about what might be possible.

Thanks Mal. We've just about given up. We were booked with Easyjet who offered insurance when we booked and we declined thinking we could do better. However, on checking their site, it seems that the same restrictions apply.
