Transporting frozen meat internationally..

Hey all,

Have an interesting situation I would like some help with.
I am flying MEL-SYD-LAX-YVR in about 5-6 weeks time. I plan to take back to Canada some Australian bbq specialities (for a special occasion) - stuff you can't buy really anywhere in Canada (real Aussie BBQ sausages, kangaroo steak).
As far as transporting this goes - I have researched this, and am aware of how best to do this (going to get some dry ice (up to 2.5kg), in a cooler bag).

My only concern is importing the meat into Canada (and transiting it through LOTFAP). I know I can just declare it on the customs form, but will there be any issues doing this? I had a look and i really couldn't find any useful information. Has anyone had any experience doing something like this before?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I don't know if you've ever been to a North American 'Barbeque'. Steak and Burgers. That's all there is. They don't do sausages like we do here in Australia. Sure, you can buy sausages in Canada. But they're your fancy schmancy 'Italian Sausages' or 'Bratwurst' or something like that. The closest thing they have that comes to our low budget, mass produced Aussie BBQ sausage is the hotdog. and that is just out of the question.

I spose it's just one of those things, since living mostly in Canada for the last 2 years, that are just not the same over there.

Josh - you need to check with your carrier airline. I am fairly sure that dry ice is not allowed. You may have to deep freeze the meat, put it in a coolie bag, and plastic wrap it. There is a wrapping station at Melbourne Terminal 2.

I have already checked with both Qantas and Alaska Airlines - both of them allow up to 2.5kg of dry ice in your checked luggage, as long as it is labelled on the outside of your luggage.
 
2.5kgs is a lot of CO2, i would have never guessed they allowed that much. Nice to know though.
