Flying SYD-BNE-NRT on QF on one ticket, I presume the luggage would be through checked to NRT?

Is there anywhere on the QF website that talks about the policy for this?

Cheers

Yes, it will be checked through and you do not have to worry about it.

note at BNE you will have to transfer to the international terminal yourself, via the bus which can take 15-20min - just be aware.

You presume correctly. Nothing to worry about, they'll dip your passport at SYD AP, check your bags through and give you the BPs for both flights.

Enjoy Japan.

Great thanks! I was a bit worried about the 1hr transit time early in the morning and all the bussing around the terminals - looks like I have time to spare!

You do not have time to spare!

A one hour transit at BNE isn't long. Do not dilly dally at all. As soon as you arrive proceed directly to the transit bus stop, it's clearly marked. Then when you get to the international terminal you'll have to go through IMMI and security, with boarding closing 20 minutes before flight departure time it will be a rush.

What's the minimum connection time (MCT) for BNE D/I transits? I thought it'd be 90 minutes.

Back-of-an-envelope calculation:
* From gate to the bus stop 5-10 minutes.
* Buses run every 10 minutes, trip takes 5-10 minutes.
= It can take up to 30 minutes to get to the Int'l terminal security check. Then whatever it takes to get through security & customs and to the gate.

and that's not even allowing for even a slight delay in either inbound, or the bus....

So yes, QF flight 400-2999 to 1-199 (domestic -> int) is 1 hour 15 mins MCT

I still cannot believe Qantas is selling these short domestic connections. Yes I know it's great when it works out and Qantas covers missed connections but why put people through so much stress?

A few weeks back I was flying OOL-SYD and on that flight were a few people connecting SYD-SIN. Flight was delayed and when we landed they were rushing these people to international as they were in the final stages of boarding. Even if flight was on time we would have landed at the time boarding started on the SYD-SIN flight.

The transfer bus can, but not always, get caught in the traffic in the morning peak at BNE international which sometimes backs up through the roundabout. Also security can be slow in the morning peak. You'll need to keep moving.

60 minute connection may be no good if your arrival into BNE Domestic is running even slightly late (or even on-time?). Seems very tight. Is there an earlier flight from SYD?

For BNE dom to int, there is no bussing around the terminal.
Its a straightish road, from the dom to int, very fast, more or less the same time as the Sydney T3 to T1.
The orange bus from BNE dom to int, is outside on the main road, you go out the BNE QFd terminal, you will see the BNE airport train station in the distance, about 500 m, that first road, you will see the QF crew, sometimes a lot of them, wait for an orange bus to come, it would say BNE int or Skygate.
At BNE int, it will go up the ramp, arr is on ground, dep is on one level up, you enter the terminal, and then take the escalators downstairs, don't ask me why, but as your passport has been dipped, / swiped on the airline side, you just need to go through outgoing Au immi, which is on ground level.
You then have int security screening, then go upstairs again, to the gates area.
Lounge time, if you have access.
QF dep from the far left hand sides, facing the runway.
I have flown out of BNE int once as a dom pax on int flight, (can't remember the QF flight number) when that 747 used to fly in from the US to BNE, then onto SYD, and BNE dom many times.
Edit, OP, which QFd are you on, 500/502 or the dreaded 504?

I am a bit confused by that statement!

I go through BNE Intl coming from BNE Dom every 4-5 weeks.
The bus from domestic will drop you outside the departures floor. You just need to look for the big yellow square thing that says "DEPARTURES". Go down the escalator, through security, through Immigration and that's it. TRS is on the right and then you walk out through the inevitable duty free store and you are in the departures hall. Airline lounges and departure gates are all on that level.
And I agree that one hour transit is a bit tight. I have just booked a International inwards flight connecting to domestic with a 1 hour 30 minute transit and thought that was a bit tight!

An hour is the minimum, by the time you get off the local flight, visit the bathroom, wander out and find the bus stop, wait, get off the bus and wander in and then customs.

It's an an hour of being attentive to where you need to be and not dawdling.

Have done it a few times and don't particularity like it. Would rather go the flight before. These type of connections are no good if you're a bit elderly or have mobility issues.

Dont know when the OP is travelling but if its school holidays, Easter ect, 1hr is not enough. I would (and have) phoned the desk to move my flight to an earlier one.

cheers,

@downloadingdata when is the flight? You need to start planning re earlier flights. Noting that QF61 BNE-NRT departs at 0925 and the first SYD-BNE flight departs at 0600 for a 0730 arrival there may be the opportunity to get an earlier flight, either now or on the day.

If you haven't gotten an earlier flight befoe rhand turn up on the day nice and early and ask to be moved ahead due to a tight international connection.

Its next week.. thanks for the suggestion - I'll try to get on the earliest flight by asking at the check-in.
