Can anyone advise me the best way to get from terminal 5 over to terminal 1 to connecting flight?

On arrival at T5, follow the signs to "Flight Connections"

This will take you to the bus which transfers across to T1

At T1 you will pass through security and be airside in T1

If you go to the BA web site you can actually print out a (basic) mud map.
