Should I bother or not? Qf566/569 return next week. No redeyes involved. How liberal are they with the drinks in Y these days on these flights? Comparable to QFi Y or not? Long time since I've jumped the dirt to PER...

I do not bother when it is 20k for the upgrade (and only 17.5k AA miles for a J award seat). The food in J has dropped in standard from a year ago also.

I tend to upgrade when I know it is an International configuration. However 20k is a lot if points depending on what you need them for. Last time (2 weeks ago) I flew from Mel to Per, I was VERY lucky I had a colleague picking me up. No way I was in any state to drive. Beverage offerings were plentiful. Between a Marlborough Sav Blanc, some James Squires and an exit row, I felt like I was in J ;).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I wouldn't bother with domestic upgrades.

20k is a ripoff. Cost me 45k to upgrade J>F on QF11 (SYD-LAX)....far better value IMHO.

As someone who does the trip regularly 20k is not good value. Never had an issue in Y with drink refills when wanted.

The meals in J transcon have degenerated significantly.

I agree it's poor value and I wouldn't do it, but if you've nothing better to do with the points, use them on the longer return leg.

It's a pity that the meals have gone so far downhill as they were really good initially when they started the 'international' style service but it's now gone back to pretty much just a slightly tarted up domestic meal
