We have booked four economy seats from Dallas to Sydney in September school holidays (s class I belive) and I have requested a points upgrade to business. I am a silver member. Expertflyer shows most business seats available at this stage although it is early days yet. Is there any way to see WHERE we sit on the upgrade request list - ie are there already a heap of other upgrades from higher status members so give up all hope now..... (This is my first post so I am a little thin on all the abbreviations)

Welcome to the forum.

I like robd's take.... http://www.australianfrequentflyer....classic-upgrade-reward-67407.html#post1230504

Four during school holidays is probably a big ask, but I'll leave it for the more experienced members to comment.

Firstly welcome aboard Star31. The upgrade request list is a dynamic list that will change many, many times until upgrades are allocated.

As you note as a PS (Silver) level member you're way down the list so even though you've asked now if an SG (Gold) member or higher asks before updates are allocated then they will be ahead of you.

And if all of your seats are on the one booking then sadly the chances are minimal at best. But as they say in the classics, you've got to be in it to win it.

Please do hang around here and let us know how it pans out.

Welcome aboard Star31

An Expertflyer Pro subscription will allow you too see how many seats are still left for sale as opposed to just unallocated which is what the base membership shows.

I am not aware of any system available to the public to see exactly where you are on the upgrade list however.

Good luck and have a good trip :)

Upgrade chances are easier on QF8 than the LAX-AU flights, providing they are opting to carry freight that day or they expect headwinds. When this occurs, the number of total pax is capped and so most upgrade requests will go through since it makes no difference to the weight of the aircraft.

Thanks for the welcome and the information everyone. Guess I will just have to try hard to ramp up my status to gold before September to improve our chances. (Or split my booking and abandon the children n economy........)

They'll survive... :p

I'm only bronze, and have requested an upgrade Honolulu - Sydney in September. Only me, and realise i'm pushing it uphill, but you never know.

This one for Noel Mugavin, can you join the QF QP?
Then ask nicely at the international J lounge if they can see any openings?
This of course is on the priviso that there is a J lounge at HNL airport though.
