This could have a significant impact on 737 and 787 deliveries!
Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas, took significant damage from a tornado last night. According to a Public Emergency Spokesperson, Spirit AeroSystems has accounted for all employees.
The company released a statement indicating, “Spirit is suspending operations due to damage – employees should not report to work tomorrow (Sunday) unless called.”
The area housing Spirit AeroSystems has taken on significant damage. The Fire Department was working on two hazmat issues with Spirit AeroSystems as of 2:30am this morning.
At Spirit AeroSystems, we have early confirmation from multiple sources six buildings are significantly damaged; four additional buildings are being reported with damage.
Spirit is a major supplier for both Airbus and Boeing and at this point we don’t know if this will affect commercial aircraft production. The company is the world’s largest supplier of commercial airplane assemblies & components. Their coreproducts include fuselages, pylons, nacelles, wing components & aftermarket services.
This tragic event may have far reaching consequences in the aviation community. Spirit does work with building the fuselage of the Boeing 737 and parts of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, including the coughpit of all Boeing airliners (known as section 41 by Boeing). Some work of the new-build Airbus A350 XWB has been sourced to Spirit for fuselage parts along with front wing spars.
