My Great-Uncle's grave at London Cemetery and Extension Loungeval taken in 2011. It is just over 30 km from Villers-Bretonneux . He was literally "just 19" and had previously served at Gallipoli. The third photo is a bit of a ring-in for this thread but ----.

My Great-Uncle

It's wonderful to see the photo and grave of your great uncle, My great uncle was killed at Gallipoli in June 1914. He was the illegitimate son of my GGM and was taken by her parents and raised as their child. Must have been very hard on everyone. Many in the family do not know he was really GGM's son. He enlisted and had had such an awful life that he apparently made it known that he didn't want to return. I am lucky in that I have the old photo album and also his enlistment photo. Unfortunately his sign up papers are incomplete but his war record is there - died of a gunshot wound to the head on board a hospital ship and was buried at sea.

A very tragic story.

I have the full Australian War Memorial's file on my Great-Uncle. It includes the letter his mother wrote to allow him to join up while ,just, underage. He went to Gallipoli as part of the relief forces and was invalided out from there with dysentery.

He was then sent to France and was posted as 'missing' believed killed in 1916. His body, together with that of another West Australian, was not found until the early 1930's. They were discovered by a farmer working his fields. Once again his family was notified and a few possessions were returned to them. Terrible days.

In 2000 we ventured to Europe-Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary & Slovenia using a variety of public transport & stayed at some great apartments.

Piestany, Solvakia in Autumn: 'the battle of the leaves'. Don't go out before they have cleared the path unless you want to wade ankle deep in leaves.

The spa island understood social distancing long before it was trendy.

Thanks RB, I had forgotten about these photographs.

In 2001 we visited Vietnam. Looking back at the photos it is obvious that we have become accustomed to having more comforts at our lodgings. We visited parts of both the north & south-flew down to Nha Trang from Hanoi to save some time

Ventured out of Hanoi to have a farm stay-these were our beds

Loved a few days at Mui Ne Beach- I understand it is now much more crowded and I see the beach front villas at Bamboo Village are still operating

Despite having spent a while in Vietnam, the traffic around the Saigon Markets was still overwhelming
