Hey guys,

just trying to find out find out some information about travelling around Tokyo. If anyone can enlighten me about some questions I have.

is it possible to buy train tickets for every day use in and around Tokyo?
if so is it cheaper to do this rather then buying a rail pass here in aus that limits me to 7 or 14 days?

Thanks

The Rail Pass is cost effective if you plan to use the bullet trains (Shinkansen) at least twice plus some inter-city trains (say Hakone from Tokyo).

For intra-city trains, the Rail Pass does not help as most lines are not from that company.

Super easy to buy the Suica card, use it on every trips no matter what lines, top it up as you go....

Use this site (http://www.hyperdia.com) for planning, price estimation etc...

I use Suica and it's very easy to use.

I find purchasing tickets for use in tokyo extremely frsutrating... and it's easy to buy the wrong ticket. An example was the ticket machine at HND that sold me a ticket to the city, but only allowed connections by the underground (and not the JR Yamanote Circle Line). This would have added 90 minutes to my journey.

Suica gets rid of all those problems.

Worth noting that the Narita Express has a special deal at the moment - Narita to Tokyo (all stations including Shinjuku) for just Y1500. This saves around 50%. This deal is not valid in reverse.

My advise is to rent a mifi (I used Global Advance) and use Hyperdia to help you use trains/subways and buses. With the help of these, we were able to travel 17 days using public transport with little stress. Hyperdia will even give you platform numbers.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A nice thing about the Suica is that you can read the balance with an NFC equipped smart phone.
Just use an app like TagInfo, the list of transactions is stored in plain text (at least it is on mine).
The Suica+Nex package at the airport is a good deal.

+1 to recommend the Suica card, which can be very easily purchased from any ticket vending machine at any station.

Simply select the english button on the machine.

One recommendation is try and avoid travel on trains during peak hours

How are you getting to Tokyo? via Narita Airport?

The answer to those questions can vary the suggestions that can be made ...

The Suica is interchangeable with the PASMO, which is what's sold by the private (non-JR) system. That's what would be available to buy if arriving at Haneda.

yes I we are travelling via Narita Airport, I have already paid for transfers to the hotel but now I am contemplating finding our own way there as the train system seems to be pretty easy to understand

Interestingly, I found it straightforward to get into the station, but always difficult to get out as the stations are huge so be sure to get the exit number you need to get to yr destination until you get used to it.

especially with the NEX deal it is cheap to travel by train. But if you need to connect from there it can start to get painful if you have luggage. Some of the connections between subway lines can be long walks.

There are maps at each station labeling streets / exit gates.

Look up where you want to go and find the nearest exit gate.

But, as mentioned, wise to remember the exit number for next time.

Not all hotels are near the subway; You need to suss that out first.
