Hi guys,

Haven't been around for a while but have been talking to a few of you on FB :)

I booked a trip yesterday to Tokyo and I leave on Tuesday - for a week. Very excited!

I've been to Tokyo before but only had 1 - 3 days each time, so time was very limited.

Anyone have favourite places to see / do?

I've got a couple of things to do: The Zoo to see new pandas, Disneyland :!::?::mrgreen: and some sight seeing, some temples and stuff I guess.

It's going to be a humid 70-80% and 28-30 degrees c  but you know what, I don't really care and all I want is to have some fun over there : - )

here are some things I recommend -

- shopping/sightseeing - ginza, shibuya, harajuku, akihabara (electronics)
- go to Odaiba one evening and walk around with nice views of tokyo bay
- go to the massive public bath house 'monogatari'
- walk around emperor's palace
- go to tskukiji fish market at 5.30am

I would do a search for AFF member Whereishome who spent a few years in Japan and there was a thread a few months back where they suggested a few good things to do while in Tokyo.

Have a good trip.

Hi guys,

FB who uses that,

Have fun BlueAU!

Hope you enjoy your trip. I've never been to Tokyo and wanted to do so in 2010, but given the earthquake/tsunami decided to let things settle down a little before making the trip over.

Make sure you do a TR

Fish markets while still worth going is less good post earthquake - they have stopped the visitor entry to the auction, so it is basically a game between the tourists and police to get as close to the big warehouse as possible without getting sent away.

Agree on the Odaiba suggestion - take the automatic train to get there.

Spent 2 weeks there earlier this year and loved it.

TOkyo disney and Disney Sea will take at least a day each, if not more if you have the time and like theme parks. Yokohama is worth a day trip, you can easily get there on the train system. Mt Fuji day trip was fun too, and you should be able to go higher in summer. We took the bullet train option to get home faster and also to ride it again. There's also a shrine right near harajuku station that was a nice lead-in to a day in harajuku, and plenty of museums and temples to see everywhere.

It's nice to walk around most of the larger areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara etc but I can't recommend much specifically. We basically spent at least a day walking around each area and used the Lonely Planet app for a few extra things to see if we were getting stuck. This also comes with a map and gps so you do not need to use your data if you have an iPhone

I'm definiteinly going to try to do a day trip to Fuji.

However with the weather forecast, it is rain rain rain, humidity ... wonder what Disneyland/Sea Disney will be like. I guess there are indoor things, gotta do it. I want to make sure I do it before the weekend as i hear it gets VERY busy!

As funny as it sounds, I'm planning on visiting Chinatown in Yokahama. Apparentally it is very big and used to be the port to China import/exports, so let's see.

Also wanted to go to fish markets, but if they've stopped the tourists, there's no way I'm getting up at 5am to do that. So thanks for the comment ;) moa999.

Finally booked accom, so all good on that font

I wouldn't bother getting up at 5am for the auctions any more, just head down at 6ish and see the sushi stores cutting up the tuna etc. There's tonnes to do at disney even if it's raining, mostly every ride is indoors so I wouldn't worry.

How did you organise the Mt Fuji trip Cynicor? I'm thinking of asking concierge ..

Conceirge. I'd had no holidays the previous year and worked a decent amount so felt that I wouldn't bother trying to find an alternative provider to save $20-50. There seems to be 1 big company that runs a lot of the tours and has a bus that picks you up from the hotel and has a few options for the return. If I could pull up my Westin folio I can check the price but I think it was about $150pp without lunch and with bullet train ticket. Was worth it for the convenience and the concierge had a catalogue of day trips through this company. No effort, no issues, very well run and an easy to understand tour guide

Also, Yokohama has more than just chinatown, which itself is worth a visit. We went to an art museum that was very nice and the city has an excellent feel to it. I would recommend getting out at the main station, doing the museum then a walk along the waterfront to Chinatown for a full day.

Damn, you're making me want to book another Tokyo trip. But hopefully picking up a puppy and kitten in spring so will probably have driving holidays for the next year.

There are lots of places to eat in Yokohama's Chinatown. We (two blokes) were marched all the way through Chinatown by our (Chinese) lady friends as they checked out each restaurant. I think we looked at about 20 before deciding on one (and it was good).

If you have any interest in museums, the Tokyo-Edo museum is not bad (forgotten which subway station).

Interesting also is Kabuki-cho near Shinju-ku station. This is a 'red-light' district which I mention only because my hotel last year was smack-bang in the middle of it.
