Would very much appreciate any tips to improve the chances of obtaining an upgrade from Economy Class to Business Class on a fully paid ticket. The economy ticket from Sydney to London is fully paid and confirmed for departure on 19 July. Qantas have waitlisted the upgrade request (=90,000 points) and were unable to give me any further information as to the likelihood of confirmation, or how many available business class seats were available on the flight. They also advised that notification is not received should the waitlist come through and I would need to keep ringing to check status (or alternatively ask upon check-in). Is there anything more I can do to increase the chances of the waitlisted upgrade being confirmed. Many thanks.

I'm in a similar situation as you except for a flight in June to London, ex ADL Via MEL and SIN.

Qantas advised me the way they do msot upgrades these days are 24 hours prior to check in if there are spare business class seats they allocate them based on the following criteria:
Frequent Flyer Status
Qantas Club Membership
Time on waitlist

The top one being the most important.

Rather than ringing up, you can check your booking, including seat allocation by using Amadeus Check My Trip Website. Enter you booking reference (6 Character number starting with 2, Y or Z) and your surname as booked. Click "Enter" button. When the booking comes up you will see a little square with an orange background containing a '+'. Click on this and you will see if you have been allocated a seat; click on this and you can generally see an allocated seat map.

If you do not have any status, Pray

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You can also check the status a waitlist on the QF FF web site under "My Bookings". But remember that since the May 25th changes, waitlists will not be cleared untoil checkin, so you are unlikely to know before you get to the airport.

The only things you can do to maximise the chance fo an upgrade waitlist clearing are:
  • Have the waitlist application lodged by a Platinum FF member. If you are not platinum yourself but are related to someone who is, transfer your points to the Platinum status member using the family transfer facility and have them apply for the upgrade waitlist for you. Waitlists are processed according to the status of the person making the application.
  • Choose a flight that is less likley to be filled with regular business travellers. That normally means avoiding Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday flights.

i concur with NM.

also consider taking your non peak time flight (as mentioned by NM above) from a city other than sydney. eg: Brisbane if you can.
